IT jobs are dominated by men, it is very nice.

If you're looking to enter IT, I'd recommend getting certifications rather than a degree since employers largely put more weight into desired certs. I'm not a programmer so I'm not 100% sure that holds true in that area of IT, but for networking it does and most others.

Certs are also nice since you can study at your own pace and not be held back by a classroom full of idiot men and females who are trying to show the world that they can be in IT too, before realizing that in IT you have to actually know what you're doing or you will quickly be exposed as a fraud.

My only advice about getting into IT is avoid female managers. I had three of them in my career and they were all drama filled dipshits leading to bad decisons and poor employee morale. They get hired because the IT industry (mostly men) is always under pressure to increase gender equality. They don’t have the skills to do actual technical work so they fall into middle management positions with ease. (One of my managers had a degree in journalism.)

If you go to an interview and the hiring manager is female, get the fuck out of there. Find a job where the manager actually knows IT.

I work in government as well, but in a male dominated area. Recently, I've been working towards completing a degree so I can branch out to other areas. I'm in Canada and gender/identity politics is becoming common in government. It's grown tired. If I hadn't already invested 20K in recent education I would pull the pin too.

How about studying for the PMP, and market yourself that way... Or something similar. Being a contractor isn't bad either, though it can be worse with the single woman small business designations...

Programming is male dominant market because it involves problem solving skills. Additionally, most of the programmers nowadays are self taught and very little programmers have degrees.

I would highly recommend you to look at the Stack Overflow survey for 2018. You'll find out some amazing statistics which will give you a good ground to stand on.

As for languages, in my opinion Java is quite dominant, used for variety of platforms and purposes. Also has a good salary based on experience and skills.

Check the local job market before diving into software development. Some areas are saturated with cheap 3rd worlders and some specific industries are less easily off-shored than others.

choose WHERE you'd like to work...not WHAT you'd work. is it outside? office? on a beach? in the mountains? if you've thought of a place...someone has made a business there, and is hiring. in my 20's i decided that i wanted to spend half my time on a beach surrounded by bikinis and half in a office surrounded by short skirts.. so i became a scuba instructor. half my time on a beach...half in a classroom...in the Caribbean. did it make me rich? fuck no....but ill put my memories against any hollywood movie any day.

IT is a good bet. you’ll encounter women, but most often they tend to be somewhat reasonable.

avoid large corporations, try to find decent small businesses. that has been my go-to for awhile, and it has worked quite well. in small companies there is no room for irritating do-nothing people

IT is lit and pays extremely well. I say this as someone who worked as a Network Architect for a couple of years (CCNA 1-4, CCNP & Degree) HOWEVER, be prepared for office politics, diversity hires bringing down your metrics so you end up missing already unrealistic KPI’s set by middle management who don’t have a clue either. Also working with women in any capacity (it’s a no from me).

If you can deal with the aforementioned, go for it. Obviously your experience may be different, but i’d recommend getting into the trades such as a sparkie, fridgie, or plumbing.
