I can attest to this in some degree.

Back in high school I had a rough time in the last half of my Senior year. I had transferred schools the year before and everything seemed fine. My counselor called me into the office to say I am probably not going to graduate with my current credits. No one bothered to tell me that in my Junior year.

Anyway, for a good month I was in a "what in the absolute fuck am I going to do?" situation. In this time, my best friend who is a girl, turned the entire friend group on me. She said all I did was complain about the situation I was in and it was a real drag. The only time I would bring it up when I was with her. Never ever brought it up when a bunch of us were hanging out, who wants to hear that shit?

I was treated like an absolute pariah by people who I thought were my friends because of her. The absolute best part was she would CONSTANTLY talk to me about a guy who was not into her at all. He didn't even notice her! He was a good friend of mine and he didn't care about hooking up with chicks. I would tell her as nicely as possible that he just isn't into you at all.

She had the nerve to ask me why I held such animosity towards her. At that time I laid into her saying that she turned all my friends against me when I needed them the most. She just looked at me like she had no idea what was going on.

When it came to the end of the school year I just nicely told her to go fuck herself, and I hope she has a great life. I saw her some years later at a friends birthday party and acted like she didn't exist. Any time she came to talk I would just find someone else to talk to. Fuck. That.

Story time.

Past gf had several sisters. One married her HS sweetheart after college. He was a trust fund kid and a little lazy in HS, but something clicked in college and he got interested in finance. While she is rapidly burning through his trust fund (several hundred thousand dollars) he is working his butt off at his new job in the federal reserve and making good money (she is spending that too) and absolutely loves the work. One day his boss makes him an offer: the fed will pay for him to get his phd and when he is done, there will be a job waiting for him at twice what he was making. There will also be massive opportunity for advancement. In short, his boss is setting him up for an amazing, lucrative career and serious wealth.

He tells the wife and she says no. They would have to lower their standard of living for four years while he gets his free education because it will only be her meager income (she spent his entire trust by this point). No foresight at all, doesn't care about his happiness, just wants it all now. So.....he walks. He files for divorce, gives her EVERYTHING, and gets his phd. Then the fed sends him to over seas where he has housing paid for and a huge salary. Meanwhile, she jumps on the CC and hasn't advanced, other than in age, since. She looks like hell, is flat broke, and has slept with dozens of men who just pump and dump. Tl;dr - The guy is my hero.
