I almost failed calculus because my math teacher would literally copy problems on the board from the book, then solve them, and say "memorize how I solved this."

I never understood why things worked the way they did, or the relationship of the various formula to the problems. No details on why things worked the way they did, when to use what formula, where and how this math came about, and the importance of it in the scheme of life. She'd just quietly solve problems on the board for 50 minutes and it was our job to copy what she did into our notebooks and memorize the answers so we could identify similar problems and solve them the way she did.

That's how my brain works. I need to understand WHY to grasp HOW. Then I can master something quickly. She refused to accommodate me. I even stayed after school and got detention for cutting track and field to get help from her. She eventually kicked me out after I failed like 10 times to do the problem she presented me.

Everyone in the class cheated on every quiz and test because they had no idea wtf they were doing. I approached her after getting a 30% on an exam, pleading with her to help me understand the material intimately, and that I should be given a second chance to take the test because I refused to cheat and use the cheat sheet that got passed around while she was browsing the internet. I'll never forget her reply, "I don't really care what you do, (so and so), and colleges don't care what you do to get good scores on SATs. Your peers will get into college. You won't, no matter how...honorable you are."

Needless to say I hate math and have never even tried looking at it again.

Come to think of it, she's one of the various reasons I hate school in general. Never went to college. Very high IQ and I graduated highschool with a D- average because I stopped doing almost all of my work junior year because I needed special help and was never given it. Only punished for being lazy and stupid.

Love knowledge. Love learning. Hate school, passionately.
