If you're nice they know that you're always available as a fallback option. Why buy the cow when you're giving away free milk?

It is like that crazy relative who doesn't want to work a regular job but keeps investing in get rich quick schemes. Every time he loses all his money and then some other relative bails them out. The reason they keep doing it is because they know somebody will bail them out.

People take advantage of unconditional love. I've seen it a lot with children of divorced parents. When one parent will love them no matter what, then they focus on pleasing the parent whose love is conditional, because they know the loving parent will always be there for them.

AWALT is really an extension of All People Are Like That to some extent. The difference is that we don't give a free pass to adult men.

I don't know if they would like them, but they'd be more likely to choose and stick with them. After all, they did in the past. I'm not sure if women liked their husbands hundreds of years ago, but they made it work because they didn't have much of an alternative. If they get only once choice of husband and then they have to live with the consequences without any support if they leave them, then I think a lot of women would probably start to exercise their gray matter at an earlier age and pick a guy who is "marriage material." Or at least their parents would for them.

The behavior of women today is just a natural response to the removal of the constraints on their behavior.

Honestly, I'm not sure the old way was really a better way. I don't want to restrain women. I just recognize that if you don't restrain them then it makes no sense to get into a relationship with one. The question then becomes how to make a functional society without the vast majority of male-female relationships.

Certainly marriage laws/etc should be reformed to be non-gynocentric. However, I don't think that is going to make people get married and live in nuclear families. It just takes away women's incentive to get married in the first place.

Back before leaving a marriage was easy and had prizes, women committed themselves more to the marriage and worked harder at actually making the marriage work.

Very true, but another factor was that women were more dependent on men back then.

They're still somewhat psychologically dependent on men (or at least their cats). However, back then a widow or divorcee or old maid was basically going to be reliant on the church/etc for charity.

Sometimes that forced women to remain in genuinely abusive relationships, which is something most of us would probably want to fix. However, I think more often it made women (and men) think twice before just abandoning relationships for petty reasons.

These days relationships are almost a form of entertainment - a purely discretionary concern. In the past it was more a matter of survival. Families were safety nets, and double the family meant double the safety net. Maybe your job is fine today, but if you lost your job it might not hurt if you were on good terms with your father-in-law. There weren't washing machines back then either so unless you like hauling your laundry down to the river having a wife around was probably pretty nice.

I think the marriage genie is going to be hard to put back into the bottle precisely because marriage is far more discretionary today. If you try to make marriage super-binding everybody will just opt out. Or you could make it completely meaningless, at which point it serves no use.

I saw one today. She pissed all over the company side wall. If I see her tomorrow I'm calling the police.

Fun fact: She even had a cat on a leash with her, and the cat pissed on our property too. So that's DOUBLE the motivation to call the police. I hate the smell of bum piss AND cat piss.

they work if you do them the right way the woman has to have her own lawyer. But what happened to baby boomers can happen to younger generations where the rules get changed. Like the addition of no fault divorce. so I wouldnt personally risk marriage.
