I'm not sure where you live, but in the US the correct answer is "fuck off." If they identify themselves as a police officer, you are required to identify yourself, but you do not have to give them any id.

As a followup to this, I walked back into the mall, went to security and told them what had happened. They had the whole "interrogation" on CCTV. We saw it, and the gent apologised profusely to me for the treatment I received.
