This isn't all that difficult. She's spoiled and equates things with affection, and is shallow enough to compare her life to others (or rather, to manipulate you into buying things for her by comparing you to others). Also, if she specifically mentioned the price, it's a status thing. Why would she care about the number otherwise?

So basically she wants to show off a piece of jewelry for a few minutes to her friends so she can feel like a princess for a bit, and she's content with making you feel like less of a man by comparing you to another girl's boyfriend in order to get that feeling.

This is a "shit test". Simplified, a shit test is a test to see how far you will go for her. She will use this as a benchmark going forward.

You CANNOT incentivize this behavior. Give her the necklace and she will ask for a bracelet. You need to call her out on her bullshit. She has ruined the gift by doing this and is stressing you out. This needs to stop.

That being said, separate the gift from the shit test. What would she buy you for your birthday? Has your birthday already passed in this relationship? The value she brings to your life MAY be worth more than the $150.

Her friend's boyfriend has demonstrated a very high level of acquiescence to her needs, and, therefore, her friend has exhibited a high level of control over her man.

Because the only thing that matters to a woman is what other women think of her, it has become necessary in her mind that she extracts a symbol of proportionately high value from you, in order that she may assuage the inadequacy she feels after her friend's display of her boyfriend's indoctrination.

In short, she wants you to buy the jewelery to prove how much power she has over you.

Do this: Keep the necklace and the receipt with the time it was bought. When her birthday comes, don't give it her or even mention it. Instead, do what another commenter said and make a skittles necklace instead and put it around her neck. Her reaction for the next two days will tell you what you're dealing with.

Note: Don't apologize for not having money, don't explain that you're in college. Be stern and say you didn't get it. To spice things up, say that you don't think shes been a good girl enough to deserve it, then boop her nose with your index finger and go do something else.

Keep they necklace, but only hand it over as a reward for good behavior from her. Show her the receipt with it too so she sees when it was bought. She wants to milk you for cash and show it off. You don't want this to happen, because it is going to doom your relationship. The whole situation is a variety of shit test.

Explaining that you're poor does not really play in your favor, as you're still letting her know she can boss you around and demand expensive shit.

Option 1, show authority: "I have a very strict policy of giving people useful gifts. What you ask for is the opposite of useful. Choose something which will add value to your life."

Option 2, dismiss: "No." Every time she brings it up. Change the subject immediately.

Option 3, call her out: "So, for you, love is measured in money? I think it's time you found yourself a guy with similar views on relationships."

Option 4, nuclear, requires you to be damn confident and attractive, otherwise you'll come off as butthurt: "I want a threesome. I'm not asking for much, my friend is in an open relationship and his GF lets him fuck new girls every week."

Ultimately, show her that she has no control over you.

Since you already bought it, I would ask for a similarly priced gift for your birthday, otherwise you come off as submissive, which women find very unattractive.

And definitely don't make a habit of this, otherwise you will quickly be seen as beta in her eyes, and she'll ditch you for an alpha the moment one chooses to flirt with her.
