NIV is fine, others will argue for a King James version (but they both say the same thing).

If you want a King James version, there is one out there that is King James but without the thee's and thou's, its called King James 2000.

If looking for an really neat online bible, try Net Bible at net.bible.org, its great.

Also, my pastor has a website that explains many things that I have not heard explained the way he did (he died about 6 months ago).

Study philosophy and formal logic.

Avoid rhetoric, be versed in dialetic.

Forge your own path and actually use your critical thinking ability.

Frankly, ALL translations will have at least SOME problematic passages and inherent biases

Including things you could say are "watered down" (i.e. translated using "euphemistic" words or phrases, instead of straight-forward "plain" language) -- and then there are some things which when translated, well they just don't "match" modern words in a one-to-one manner, and so some "interpretation" (i.e. choice) ends up becoming part of the translated text.

-- Per example: in Genesis (i.e. Creation, Adam & Eve, Garden of Eden, etc), how does one PROPERLY translate "הָֽאָדָ֖ם" {aka "hā·’ā·ḏām"}?

Is it best translated/transliterated as "Adam" as if it were the modern formal first "name" we are familiar with?
Or does one translate it more simply as "man" which is its actual meaning?
Perhaps "THE Man" or "First Man" would be even better (more "proper" or exact) because that's it's extended/implied meaning -- but of course this is TWO options not one (and which is better "THE Man" or "FIRST Man"?)

Each of those above is a viable/defensible option, none of them is technically "wrong" ... and yet a choice must be made, and that choice will subtly (or even in some ways dramatically) alters the manner in which one reads, understands, and "interprets" the text:

Is it a specific "story" of specific NAMED individuals?
Or is it a more generic "mythological-tale" regarding early man & woman (possibly even multiple men & women), and with different/broader implications as a result?

I think a solid case CAN be made for either, or indeed both/all of those.

But if your CHIEF goal is to avoid the modern/post-modern "gynocentric" crapfest...

Then in general, go for the "older" translations -- basically any/all of the ones from mid-20th century or prior, like KJV, Revised Standard, American Standard, etc (some of the circa 1970's "translations" like NKJV, NIV and NASB aren't TOO horrible, at least if you get one of the earlier editions -- IOW not the most recent "updates" many of which have been purposefully rendered "gender neutral" and "politically correct" in other ways {particularly any/all "critical" passages about women, some of which have been virtually "expunged" of meaning}).

One side benefit of that is that the older translations are usually INEXPENSIVE (so it's easy/cheap to purchase multiple versions even multiple sizes, some lightweight thin-paper "pocket" Bible or New Testament+Psalms, and some larger font desk/table/lap version).

-- Personally I would SEEK to get and read more than one translation.

And IMO the key (worst) ones to avoid are the (recent) so called "study" bibles

Meaning anything and everything PUSHED by some modern "mega church" (i.e. "Purpose Filled Bible" etc) -- all of which (in addition to "emasculated" text like a "genderless 'God'") have HUGE amounts of often highly misleading "commentary" and "interpretations/applications" that effectively NEUTER the full meaning of the text, and distract people into a whole array of nonsense -- not to mention that "study" bibles are ridiculously overpriced.

-- Ideally, for more advanced, "in depth" study, you should also get a "transliteration" -- i.e. a "transliteration" is a "word by word" translation, keeping the original word order, ABSENCE of grammatical markings etc. (By contrast most bibles are broader "full sentence" translations, they which change word order, grammar, etc; rendering archaic constructs into a more modern phrasing) -- Personally I like Green's Hebrew/Greek "Interlinear Bible" as a sort of ideal for more advanced study (with a concordance & lexicon) alongside the various "translations."

Now, it isn't actually necessary to BUY all of those* -- there are various online tools (FREE) where you can readily look up various passages in any of the different translation (or even several of them side-by-side or next to each other) -- Per example http://biblehub.com/ even has an "Interlinear" with both Hebrew (OT) and Greek (NT) over the English transliteration

* Certainly NOT in printed paper form. Various KINDLE and other ebook editions are available inexpensively, as are PDF versions (particularly of the older translations -- most of which are in the "public domain")

As for additional suggestions...

I would strongly recommend beginning your reading (and I highly encourage just plain READING of the text initially -- rather than "studying" in the dissecting/analyzing manner -- that can come later for additional insight once you're thoroughly familiar with certain sections, books and passages)...

I would strongly recommend beginning your reading NOT with Genesis -- but instead with the "Wisdom" books in the "Old Testament" -- specifically Ecclesiastes first and foremost, then Proverbs, and then Psalms. All of those can be read in "small doses" and can be quite edifying even in such "small bite" manner -- especially if you can read and CONTEMPLATE the sections in some peace & quiet.

Then move on to the four Gospels in the New Testament; and from there... well that's probably enough to start on.

Preface: I'm no longer religious (just agnostic now), but was huge into translations and versions when I was younger. I also came from a highly conservative and traditional American church that was all about proper interpretation and sola scriptura, or the idea that biblical scripture carries all spiritual needs and is the end of all spiritual matters.

The "easier" the language, the less likely it is to carry the full weight or meaning of the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic writing. On the other hand, the closer it is to those languages, the less readable the translations. This goes hand-in-hand with the idea that certain versions are better for studying, others better for just general reading.

For example, the Amplified Version will have multiple translations and meanings of a particular word or phrase within the same verse, but it is borderline unusable as reading material (image example, though the translations can become dramatically more complex). If you wanted to enjoy a reading session (e.g.) detailing the story of David, the Amplified will be one of the worst choices aside from simply buying photocopy manuscripts and learning Hebrew. On the other hand, for deep study you'll find all kinds of great interpretations of a particular phrase that would otherwise be confusing out of context, or make no sense in English, but has simply become the norm from centuries of simple presence in (for example) the King James Version.

On the other hand, for general reading, you would want something that carries the semantic value in a highly expressive way in English. This could be easier-to-read translations like the New King James Version, the New Living Translation, the New International Version, etc. These are great for reading but problematic for study because they dilute or water down original meanings.

It is also worth noting no single translation will be perfectly accurate. For example, some claim the KJV is inspired and perfect, but cannot explain imperfections in translation such as the inclusion of the word "Easter," which didn't even exist at the time of writing. All translations will have some kind of quirk like this, but rarely anything that grossly changes the meaning except in extreme translations (e.g., there's one translation that converts all names and locations to a southern American setting).

So there really is no perfect translation for all purposes, and if you wanted to get into the Bible for various reasons, it's worth looking into obtaining multiple versions -- at least one with semantic expression and at least one with "literal" translation. Then you can read along in the former and cross-reference questionable wording or confusing subjects with the latter.

For study, I recommend a simple study Bible such as the Life Application Bible (which comes in multiple translations) or the Amplified. There are even versions of the New Testament that have the original Greek text with English underneath that translates each word individually, which is almost impossible to read in a contiguous manner but expands the text on a molecular level. (There's really no need for this unless one is a preacher or historian, but it's out there.)

For reading, I recommend New King James, New Living Translation, or English Standard Version. But almost all versions have their merits.
