Summary:

1) Your narcissism makes you fear the humiliation of making mistakes so you never start. Remember that you don't truly matter enough (yet) for others to care about what you do

2) Everyone around you is too narcissitic and self-absorbed to care about you and your mistakes

3) Overcome your narcissism by reminding yourself of your low self-worth in order to start "I have nothing to lose and everything to gain"

Elliot Hulse covers these points really well in this short 3 minute video I'm too Skinny & Embarassed to Go to the Gym

Accept that you are Nothing in order to start to become Something

We are often afraid to start new projects (Going to the gym, starting to lift, going to MMA/boxing classes, starting your own company, going to college late in life etc.) due to the fear due to messing up and thus embarrassing ourselves. We constantly view the world from a point of vanity where we worry about what others think of us and how we are percieved. And I'm here to remind you that you don't mean shit. You count for nothing. You have 80/90 years on this planet max, then you will die and the world will move on. Mistakes/failure and the feeling of embarrassment that come with it are all temporary.

Noone in the gym cares enough that you're only benching the bar with no weights, noone in the MMA class cares when you sit on the side and take a break because you're an unfit couch-sloth whose only form of exercise so far in life has been jerking off, noone at work will care when you resign and start your own business making crap and selling it on Etsy/eBay/Reddit/DarkWeb, noone in college cares that you're 30/40 with a receding hair line and already married, noone in a public place (bar/supermarket/library/waiting room) will care when you fail at trying to start a conversation with that girl you find pretty. Everyone is already too caught up in their own world and the world always moves on. Others not caring about you is a good thing. Right now you are invisible in the eyes of others (women + men) and that invisibility is a good things.

As someone who is recovering from depression and anxiety, the funniest thing I've realised about our mental state is that it is a paradox. On the one hand you will have feelings of low self-esteem and non-existent self-worth but on the other hand you think you're the world's most important person and so everyone will watch everything that you're doing. Thus you're always shit-scared of doing anything because of the fear of messing up and then absolutely everyone will know that you messed up.

If you have feelings of low self-worth and low self-esteem I would advise you, as Tyrion Lannister would, use those feelings. When starting any task and the little gremlin in your head starts saying things like "You're going to mess up" or "You're a going to fail and everyone will know that you're a failure" respond and say "Well I don't count for jack shit so when I mess up noone is going to care". Learning to deal with this internal monologue is a form of CBT and by simply adding on these types of one liners to your self-deprecating thought patterns will be enough to allay your fears and allow you to start. Free yourself from the burden of others' expectations because noone cares enough about you as you do about yourself.

Once you start and you start making newbie gainz (one girls' number, one successful interview, one business contract, one week without jerking off/PornHub, acing one test, learning one set of chords; it only has to be one thing), you will find the motivation to continue. If not the motivation to improve yourself, the competitive nature of your Y chromsome will kick in. If you used it to max out your WoW/Runescape/COD/GTA character, it will kick in to better you; the only character that matters in this game called life. I'm going to post a photo of what I'm currently benching later (hint: it's just the bar), it's not much but I remind myself that "even a snail laps everyone on the couch".

Overcoming fear is the true path to cultivating an IDGAF attitude and is what will allow you to start anything you want and so start this journey of self-improvement.

Ending quote:
"People say love someone so much that you would do anything for them, make that person yourself"

Side note:
Mindfulness and meditation are often mentioned on here as a self-help tool but I would like to give a warning for guys like myself suffering from depression as it can be dangerous. Meditation can trigger Psychosis and lead to Psychotic episodes. If you have self-deprecating thought patterns, mindfulness/meditation can amplify them sending you over the edge into even worse spirals. When left to yourself, you can simply obsess over things you don't have and start to self-hate which isn't healthy. For individuals with depression/anxiety I would advise other healthy activities instead where you are actively doing something.
