Fell for a girl over the internet when I was 15. Looking back, the first red flag was the distance and lack of physical contact. She invented a new persona for me. At the worst of my depression, which was primarily instigated and perpetuated by her mixed signals and the distance, I scraped up the money to meet her, and she was callous and essentially ignored me the whole time I was out there. She had just broken up with her boyfriend after cheating on him and spent all her time with the dude she was fucking while I was out there. Her behavior was ridiculous - she'd bail on plans in order to see him, she started ignoring her pets (I was feeding and watering them, and one of them actually ended up dying for reasons I don't understand) and she started selling her stuff for cash. A few weeks later, I found out she was dabbling with drugs with her new fuckboy. My depression worsened, but there's a silver lining, and honestly this was perfect timing. Her ex that she fucked over started inviting me to hang out, and I got to hear all the horror stories he survived from the relationship. I got to hear first hand that the mirage I had of her was entirely false. To this day, 3 years later, him and I are best friends, and I fly out to hang with him when I can afford it. So at least I got something out of it. We both agree we feel like we survived something, so I guess that's one of the reasons why we're so close. After a few years of therapy after I flew back home, I discovered MGTOW and never looked back. I was essentially leaning that way without even realizing it (I made no effort to pursue women for 2 years after flying back and focused on my well being) but once I realized there was an actual MGTOW philosophy, I dived right in. I haven't talked to her since, and the guy she had cheated on my friend with ended up getting her addicted to heroin shortly after I left.

Tl;dr Bitch led me on for years, no self esteem to acknowledge red flags, karma prevailed, learned a lot and gained close friends in process, haven't heard from her since and life is genuinely better.
