im sure its the same in the US as in the UK but any assets or debt you have/hold BEFORE a marriage are still yours and always will be.

so in theory you could marry a woman who has £100k debt she is now living with you in your house and debt collectors arrive they cannot touch any of your stuff (provided its 100% actually yours)

when you marry you dont merge your assets and debt that you accued BEFORE THE MARRIAGE.
