We talk a lot about women, but men are just as bad in this degree. 99.9% of people are absolute bags of shit. They will leave you as soon as you suffer any kind of setback, show any sign of weakness or humanity. They are out for themselves. If you, as a man, cannot be a rock for them, even most other men, you are useless in their eyes. This is why the most intelligent and strongest among us walk alone. Every man is an island at heart. Nobody knows our struggle but ourselves. A certain beauty to it, but we all know the pain that comes with it. Such is the life of a man.

You get 1 or 2 true bros who will ride and die for you, and that's it. The rest will dip as soon as you don't serve their purpose or live to their expectations. I have 2 real friends, guys I would take a bullet for, and I know they'd do the same. And that's all I need.

The ones you need to watch for are the codependent types. They are drawn to people that are having problems and will at first appear to be caring and helpful. The reality is that they are using you to feed their fragile egos. It's virtue signaling at 10,000% and they go apeshit if you try to break free.

Well to give you a new perspective. I have a male friend. Whatever happens I'm there for him. But lately his depression increases. He keeps moaning and moaning and moaning. With every conversation I hear this sad / annoying tone in his voice.

I gave him advice to start training, that he could sleep at my house so that I can help him overcome his sigaret addiction. But in the end he never takes my advice. Keeps complaining. (I'm complaining now too)

So I'm not calling him anymore, just a few WhatsApp messages. But I prefer a few days / weeks without his moaning.

I think it depends. I've gotten really lucky. A lot of the people in my life are kinda the opposite. They will be there when shit hits the fan and don't worry about the good times so much and I'm the same way with them. The good times are great but if you find the right people they are know the value of helping others out of the hole. Just know that effort in doesn't always equal effort out....but it will help.

I used to get angry at this but this is just another instance of the man-animal survival instinct.

I remember a harsh saying the ancient Greeks had "if you don't benefit anyone, no one will love you". We are selfish to the core. The only reason we even associate with other man-animals is because we are trying to get something out of it, whether it's as big as the preservation of DNA (sex), or as simple as establishing a reciprocal debt arrangement (friendship).

Don't "act strong" thinking this will somehow bind these connections. This creates the opposite effect and makes the connections more fragile, not less. This is because they see the greater contrast between the "strong" and "weak" self and warrants them greater opportunity to see that disparity. What do I mean? I mean that you at your best only has one place to go - down. "The sharpest knife dulls the quickest", as the saying goes. This presents a fragile existence. It's better to be weak because this presents the true test for potential others and weeds out early on the most fickle of the creatures. And, secondly, being weak only has one way to go - up. So any allies you gained while at your weakest can only be made happier with their investment in you. And, moreover, they will then praise you for having made such great strides of improvement, further winning their favor.

But you see them crying on social media and the like, but deep down, we all have our own issues to deal with others.

Real friends will obviously care about their friends state, because they dont like seeing someone they like be that way. But if that person starts affecting their lives too... then they just turn around and stop paying attention to it.

I realized this a while ago, when I was being a wet blanket when we gather socially, I was showing them my sadness and its affecting my friends having a good time. They talk to me sure... but it was also NOT fair of me to bring them down to my level. When I really did need them, they hanged out with me and advised me, but lesson learnt.... everyone just want to NOT worry, if you make them worry... then you are bringing them down too. There is a time and a place for friends to comfort you, but it should not mean they suffer as well.

Six months ago, I had a mental breakdown due to relationship problems, went off on one month sick leave, then unpaid stress leave for three months from work. Went on vacation to another country and spent time with close extended family.

I came back to work stronger and on top of things. Your perspective was exactly like mine. The friends that I hung out with previously, both work friends and outside work friends felt distant, despite me trying to reestablish a connection. I have gone on longer trips before and never had the same issue. Now with the rumours and gossip floating around, people who I thought I was close to, have left my circle.

But all is not negative. It may seem that way, but trust me THIS IS A GOOD THING. This experience is the BEST thing to have happened. It showed me what people in my life truly are. These worthless people are what you call "fairweather friends." Don't waste time and effort on these people. This experience showed who I can rely on when shit hits the fan; who I can trust when I needed them the most. These were the ones you keep for life.

Ultimately, two amongst almost three dozen stood out. They didn't give a flying fuck about what happened to me or the rumours surrounding my absence--because they knew exactly who I really was, and my value in life. One or two best friends is better than a hundred associated friends.
