When it comes to men improving themselves, most of the talk is concerning the comparison of an aplha vs beta male. I personally feel like this doesn't make much sense anymore because there is no consistent definition of what an "alpha male" really is.

For example, I've seen this one video where a pick-up artist hits on a girl who was already dating a guy. Then her boyfriend comes over and gets into an argument with the PUA. Long story short, the boyfriend threatened the PUA that he'd break his jaw if he ever tried hitting on her again.

Now when I read the comments to this video, most of them are praising the PUA for keeping his cool. They shower him with comments on his "alpha" behaviour and they belittle the chick's boyfriend by calling him a "beta-male" mangina.

This confuses the hell out of me because her boyfriend was nowhere close to being categorized as a "beta" male. The boyfriend was tall, naturally good-looking, and quite muscular. The PUA on the other hand, was much shorter, balding, and pale. Also, the boyfriend managed to get the PUA to back off from the girl. If they actually had gotten into a fight, the PUA would've gotten pulverized, seeing that it doesn't look like he has any martial arts training. In this case, it looked like the boyfriend had dominated the smaller, less attractive PUA, and made him look like a fool in front of everyone. Yet, it's weird how everyone in the comments section is praising the PUA and calling the boyfriend a "beta male." There's no way this PUA was an alpha male in any sense. He didn't have an "alpha" presence when he was at the bar. It's not like girls were surrounding themselves in his presence. In fact, a lot of girls were actually gravitating towards the boyfriend, even after he threatened to break the PUA's jaw. I guess that type of aggressive behaviour just got them really wet. They were telling him things like "aww, you're so mean," but you can really hear it in their voices that they were thirsty for the boyfriend's cock. It truly seemed like the boyfriend was the true alpha male in this situation.

This made me realize that people just throw the words "beta" and "alpha" around like candy. There's no consistency to the definition. If someone is obviously an alpha male, he still gets called "beta" just because he stood up to his rights to stare-down anyone who was trying to steal his woman. But if he didn't decide to approach the PUA, and just let him take his girl, people in the comments would still call him a beta male for being a pushover.

At this point, people are just picking sides.

If you confront another man for hitting on your girl, you are apparently a "beta male" because you are afraid that your girl will fall for the other guy.

But I've seen it both ways. If you decide that you're not going to confront the PUA and just let him hit on your girl, people will STILL call you a beta male for being a pushover, and not having the courage to stand up for yourself. People just can't make up their minds when it comes to these definitions.

TL;DR

Should we even be worried about these labels? I want to improve myself as a man, but I feel like these "alpha/beta" labels are so outdated. There's no consistency in the definitions. They only make sense if you're trying to classify animal packs and cavemen.

Also, is it possible to be "alpha" without being a dick to others? I hear from other people that you should hang out with other alpha males so that some of their personality/attitude traits rubb off on you. But, I actually hung out with some of these alpha males at the gym, and honestly they're a bunch of assholes. I don't know if I want to become one of these guys. Most of the ones I've met have very boring lives, and even worse personality traits when it comes to friendship. It's like, not only are they being assholes to females, but they're also being assholes to other fellow males. This is not the person I want to be. I don't want to be a sociopathic douchebag that takes advantage of other humans for personal gains and show no sympathy. I want to be a good friend among my fellow males and also be a respectable man.

Should I just work on being a better man/good human being, and just forget these labels of alpha/beta?
