The dude should have been upfront with her about the costs of taking the car before she drove it to her parents house. In all fairness.

Sounds like she wasn't upfront about what she wanted to "borrow" his car for:

A quick pop into the local town to the grocery store is one thing.
A road trip that apparently* was several hundred if not a thousand miles or more, and apparently across multiple state lines, is quite another.

And I also don't think she's telling the FULL story here, rather she's spinning it for sympathy. Note how she relates the communication around this "rental fee":

Yeah see, I think she "texted" him -- rather than call him -- because she knew he'd have blown his stack when he learned (or more likely figured out) where she had driven his car, and she wanted to avoid that "conflict" and "confrontation" (i.e. she wants to avoid responsibility for her lying & deception).

Then there's the cute little bit about "the way I worded things" -- yeah she means that when she asked to "borrow" his car she made no mention of the fact that she was planning on driving it from Minneapolis to Atlanta. And moreover that she didn't even tell him where she went in the text message, instead relying on "trickle truth" and mentioning something she thought would slip below his radar, something akin to "How good the mileage was" and that she "Only had to fill the tank once on the drive down." but then also "Oh, don't worry!" she knows it had a full tank, and that "I'll make sure it's full again back home."

She's trying to play the "miss innocent" game; the "Little old me? A deceptive tricksey manipulator? ... Why however could you think such a thing! [blink blink blink]"

Under THOSE kinds of circumstances, well I think his statement that she owed him some "wear and tear" rental fee... is more than generous; given that in essence she more or less committed grand theft auto. (Yeah he said she could "borrow" the car, he did not give permission to drive it across the country and back.)

I've run into almost exactly this kind of thing before myself with "girlfriends" -- they wait until you're in some constrained circumstances to ask the favor (in this case apparently right before the guy left on his flight), ideally when they're already in possession of the keys (per example to drive the vehicle back home from the airport) and then they minimize the request "it's OK if I borrow your car, right" (which has the sound of or implies "for a few minutes, because I need to pick up some milk and eggs and a few other odd things on the way home"; to which the answer is "Well of course that's OK.") -- but the reality is that what they've ALREADY got "planned" (and do not mention at all) is that they want to use it to pick up a friend and head out for a multiple hour drive across the state, or some other such major project or endeavor.

Ayah.

* I'm speculating here, the details are pretty sparse on the ground (no doubt intentionally because she's trying to spin her side of the story and play "innocent victim") -- but given the several little circumstantial tidbits -- like that at $50 per day she'd be paying him $250 (which means she "borrowed" it for the better part of 5 days); that she was already concerned about and planning on reimbursing the amount of gas she used (IOW, we're not talking a gallon or two, but rather a tankful or more), and keep in mind this is a little gas sipping Honda Civic (the thing should get somewhere between 35 to 50 miles per gallon); and that the only other alternative plan she had wasn't to have the folks or a sibling pick her up, or to take a taxi, but instead would be to get a car from a rental agency -- all make it fairly obvious that this wasn't a quick jaunt to the folks (in some adjacent town 15 miles away) for an afternoon dinner and then back home by midnight; rather it sounds like she was putting substantial miles (again, at least several hundred, possibly a thousand or two thousand or so) and that on a relatively old vehicle (13+ years, probably 100,000 miles on the odometer, and most likely approaching some major repair work soon... even sooner now that another 1,000 to 2,000 miles has been put on it).

Something doesn't add up here.

NONE of it "adds up" -- at least not in support of the little story she' trying to spin here.

For multi-day trips it's cheaper to fly than to drive and you get to spend more time at your destination.

Ah, but that "cheaper" is only true if you add up the total cost per mile... if all you are going to have to pay for is the gas you use then it isn't (especially with gas at decade-low prices).

Think about it, let's say she DID drive from somewhere near Minneapolis to around Atlanta, a one-way distance of oh approximately 1,000 miles; and in a car that we'll tag as getting 40 mpg on the trip (a Civic should get at least that on the highway); that would mean she'd be burning through about 25 gallons each way, a total of 50 gallons; and at current prices of around/under $2 a gallon, that's a total cost (to her) of just $100. She's not going to get a round trip plane ticket for that price; hell the taxi cab (or "Uber" car) rides to/from the airport on both ends of that trip are going to cost her more than $100.

Now the actual total cost -- wear & tear, etc -- is still going to be around 50 to 55 cents a mile (that's IRS computed average per mile cost); meaning about $1,000 to $1,100. But SHE is not having to personally PAY all that -- he's going to be paying for it -- so in essence he's "subsidizing" her little trip to the tune of somewhere around $900 to $1,000.

On a trip of that length (and again why else would it be a 5 day trip?) even if she DID pay him $50 per day x 5 days for a total of $250... he'd still be subsidizing about $650 to $750 worth of her trip (whereas her total cost would be $350): in other words, he'd be footing about 2/3 of the bill.

I wonder if her car ending up in the shop at exactly the time when she had to leave for the trip is no accident. That is, she planned to use his car from the start, hoping she'd get to use it for free.

BINGO. We have a winner!

Sounds pretty likely... in fact, in my experience that is EXACTLY the kind of (devious, duplicitous) "planning" a woman would do (they plan for their OWN convenience, regardless of the cost to others, especially any cost to MEN), and they do all of that "planning" without consulting the other people involved, they just "assume" that they'll be able to "get away with it".

Then try to play "miss innocent" afterwards, as if it were all just some random "coincidence" (like "accidentally" getting pregnant on the ONE day that she forgot to take her "pill" -- yeah riiiiight, NOT!) ... and of course, if and when they are called out on it, they will try to rally "support" for their version of the story (because as in this case, she knows damned well that she got caught in her little plan/lie and she needs to try to "mitigate" that -- seems like she already tried to get that support from friends/family and failed {probably because they know her, and know "the rest of the story", like the length of the trip, etc}, so instead she turns to an online forum -- because she NEEDS to get a bunch of people to agree that she was some "victim" so that her hamster will be happy).

I also take note of the fact that she never mentions any specifics about WHY her car was "in the shop", what was being done on it for work (which lets be honest is not exactly some "doxxing" privacy thing); yet she seems concerned about THAT cost, and is apparently having to leave her vehicle there for several days. Which means it obviously wasn't for an oil change, also wasn't a quick brake-job, nor anything else that would be routine maintenance (because for any/all of those you can usually get "priority" service if you let the shop know you need the vehicle for a trip; especially if you're a chick and turn on the "feminine charm"). Chances are it was for either some "optional" work (body shop to repair damage after an accident), or else something major that she had been "living with for a while" (clutch getting worse, transmission problems, etc) which indicates that she delayed and CHOSE to have serviced at this specific time. (So that her "normal" routine wouldn't be inconvenienced -- again its all about HER convenience; no one else's.)

In addition, note the specific time she chose -- when he was going to be out of town for basically a whole week; something he doubtless planned well in advance. (And boy howdy how she emphasizes repeatedly that his car would just be "sitting there" unused, as if that was somehow a "waste of resources" like food that would need to be thrown out if she didn't eat it.)

But the main point there is that she had plenty of lead time to openly and fully discuss THIS possible/planned use of his car, for her longish "road trip"... but WHEN did she decide to spring it on him and get his agreement to let her "borrow" his car? Why at the last minute, the day he was leaving. And even then she didn't ask honestly.

She expected to pay for fill ups that she had to do on the way but that's about it.

Basically she's agreeing to NOT make him pay for the fuel SHE will be using; my how generous!

That's akin to someone saying they'd like to borrow my "fridge" -- eating my food, but agreeing to replace whatever they eat -- and that works with a fridge, because there's no real "wear & tear" going on... unlike with a car, there's no 2,000 mile addition to an odometer (and subsequent loss of value in the vehicle), or 2,000 miles worth of tread loss on the tires, or the need for another oil change, etc. (Not to mention the possibility of her wrecking the car -- especially if I'm right in my speculation about why her car is "in the shop" -- and she'd prefer to risk HIS car on that, rather than her own.)

She fucked him over... she got exactly what she wanted; and basically at no loss to her.

Oh, and by the way she probably figured that the "break up" was going to happen over this; besides she was planning on ditching him anyway.

I think you're being generous here. If she returns the car with the gas tank at the same or higher level, it would be by complete accident. Just like how these women expect to borrow things from men, they use them without any thought of returning them in the same state they got them in. She'll bring back the car with the gas needle at E if she can get it back to him on fumes. She'll probably have some excuse ready such as how she was in a hurry to come back to see him and if he brings up the discrepancy in gas she's ready to go on the offensive and enter a faux outrage mode "I do x, y, and z for you and care about the fucking gas?" The x, y and z being things she did with the sole purpose of being able to bring them up in this way.

When she says she'll pay for the gas, she means that it's physically impossible to make the trip on one gas tank, and she has no choice but to fill up the tank on the way.

Edit: In my youth I've had similar lines of thought about a few women around me when all the evidence was staring me in the face. Being a white knight back then I was then quickly ashamed of how I could think such horrible things about someone and quickly changed my mind. It all turned out to be true, of course, every single time. Confirming it came with a high price. Nowdays I trust people to act in their own self-interest, regardless of whether they are male or female.

LOL, no not really. Note that I said that was what she claims to have been "agreeing to" not how it would actually play out.

Also note that I didn't say she was agreeing to return it with a FULL tank, just with "(approximately) the same amount of gas in the tank that it started with." And of course she will claim that was only a "1/4 full", when most likely it started out as "1/4 empty" but she would undoubtedly claim that she merely "mistyped" when she said the latter, she was really saying the former.

Oh indeed. If the exterior had been nice and cleanly washed/waxed, it'll be returned covered in mud, with a statement from her about how that's how it started, or that she has "no idea" how it got that way... or if by some chance she admits that it happened on "her watch" ten the blame will be laid on some passing truck(s)... though how they would be responsible for the underbody of the car being caked with clay...

And of course the interior, which while it may not have been pristine, would probably have begun relatively clean -- will come back covered in crumbs and filled with fast-food bags and empty soda cans & plastic bottles, and assorted other detritus.

Also the X, Y, & Z things were almost certainly trivial and rather shabbily done (almost certainly involving the use of materials and equipment owned & paid for by the man, and probably mostly related to cleaning up crap that the woman got dirty... i.e. the "I did your dishes for you after that dinner last week and THIS is how you treat me?" kind of thing, ignoring that the meal was at HIS home, using HIS food and HIS kitchen, and HE was probably even the one who cooked; and then of course the "doing the dishes" was mostly a matter of placing a pan and few plates and utensils into HIS dishwasher and {GASP!} pressing the "start" button... she of course left before the dishes were done and didn't put them away.)

As a kid, I remember laughing at George's wife "Jane" complaining about how hard she "worked" cooking & cleaning, since it consisted of pushing a few buttons... (and of course considering that my mother didn't have either a microwave OR a dishwasher, or indeed even an "automatic" clothes washing machine or dryer {she had an old "wringer" machine and hung the clothes outside, or in the winter in/across the basement}, much less did we have anything even remotely like a "Rosie Robot").

But seriously... it HAS gotten just about that bad. And not just with WOMEN. Years ago I agreed to "house-sit" for a family that had 3 boys (the older two teenagers, but not yet driving, hence you can't call it "baby-sitting"} in the youth group I was a leader of while the parents went on a week-long vacation/retreat thing; anyway the first night after dinner I couldn't believe that the kids all WHINED & COMPLAINED and the ARGUED about WHICH of them was going to have to "do the dishes" (literally moving them < 5 ft from the table to the dishwasher, adding soap and pressing a button). Absurd. So I said "enough with that" and made then ALL do the dishes together WASHING BY HAND IN THE SINK; one washing, another drying, and the third putting them back in the cupboard! (Made them do that the whole week.) When they started to complain about the laundry... all I had to do was say, "Hmmm, I wonder whether maybe you guys would like to do THOSE by hand as well... I mean the river is just down the hill, and there are rocks you could beat the clothes on..." and voila magically the arguments ceased and they managed to (whispering) agree to work together to do the laundry in the machines.

LOL... true, that's doubtless what is in her mind, but since I also think that she had no intention of letting him know she was planning on taking a "trip" with his car... well, her statement in regards to the gas I suppose is doubly duplicitous: she's saying one thing, but she KNOWS he is interpreting it to mean something else.

LOL. I've never really suffered any such delusions. I've always known -- or at least since my teen years anyway -- that just about everyone will take advantage of and/or at least take for granted (and abuse) whatever you allow them to get away with.

The worst offenders (at least in my experience) tend to be people you are only trivially associated with -- say the "girlfriend" of a roommate/housemate who would gain access to the house/kitchen in order to "cook dinner" for their lover boy (or worse, for some group of "their" friends), and would proceed to ransack the entire larder... using up what was probably well over a week's worth of food (at least half of it MINE -- and this was back in the day when I was broke as fuck). But I mean seriously who the HELL makes an entire BOX (a big one) full of spaghetti noodles all at once? And ONE jar of spaghetti sauce should be more than enough for a "dinner for four" so why the fuck did she need to use all THREE of the jars I had bought? Especially since she also added canned tomatoes and used up my ground beef in the mix as well! (The same with the vege, pick ONE can/type not 4 different ones you b*tch!) Worse then of course the leftovers (probably more than 1/2 of what was made) ending up being thrown out afterwards, because the little "princess" couldn't be troubled to do anything other than leave it sit out on the table/counter for hours after the meal. And then to top it all off of course, after serving up "dessert" (some "cake" she had actually bought on the way there) she left the ice-cream (a barely touched "bucket") out to melt as well.

Nowdays I trust people to act in their own self-interest, regardless of whether they are male or female.

I basically assume even worse -- that they're all careless-as-fuck dumb-asses -- they don't end up acting even in their own best interests... they're generally all so spoiled by excess and having other people fix their various "fuckups" that they live their life like "loose cannons" bashing into things randomly with the winds and waves of life; and figuring that even if/when they get their ass into deep shit... that it will be someone ELSE'S responsibility to come along and "save" them.

Think of all the idiots who engage in various "extreme" sports (and without ANY thought simply "expect" that somehow "other" people will cover the resulting hospital bills, ambulance ride, etc). Or the number of jackasses who head out to the "wilderness" ill-prepared... and believe that either their cell phones will function (in the "middle of nowhere" some national forest or something) -- or otherwise operate under the inherent expectation that it's really not "wild" and that dozens if not hundreds of people (and a host of "emergency" services/machinery) will be out "searching" for them (for days on end) if/when they get lost, again regardless of cost.

It really does "boggle the mind" how sickeningly "entitled" most people are these days.
