Career advice: Should I have taken the job that paid more, but wasn't as fun?

This is just my opinion. It is subjective (neither right or wrong):

The purpose of a job is to make money so you can establish a certain standard of living and maintain it. You, as a person should strive to do the most benefitting work so you could make enough money to live comfortably.

"Fun" is a very immature thing to take in consideration when taking a job (no offense), the concept of "work what you love never work for a day" imo is nothing more than a self improvement scam or a facebook quote that sounds good when read, that is all what it is.

Don't overwork yourself and become a work rat, your employers won't care. Only work as much as you need to work to maintain pay and promotions. If what you work is your hobby then only "overwork" if overwork makes you more money, if not, then find a way to enjoy what you do in your job OUTSIDE your job. Always remember that if you are not self employed you are disposable.

Fun is in hobbies and post work activities.

I personally stayed in a position at my work that pays less than some others that I can objectively say I would have no problem going into

My reasoning was that my current job pays pretty well and gives me a lot more free time, and mainly that the gap between the responsibilities and effort is pretty high while the pay increase did not justify it

But my desire was different to yours because I wanted work that's even less challenging, so in your position I would definately have taken the easier job for more pay

It’s totally up to you!

If you need a challenging and sometimes fun position go for it!

Yes money is important but shouldn’t be the only trigger, unless you are triggered only by money.

At the end of the day it’s your lifetime and the job should be interesting and fun as well.

From my experience, I often changed job because I got used to it and it got boring as hell and at that point no money helps!

My boss retired and the CEO wanted to give me 20k (from 81k to 101k) to be the dept manager and I said FUCK NO because the manager did not get to write software at all and just did paperwork.

You describe in your title a job that was less "fun" but in your description you say it wasn't as "challenging". So, which is it? "Challenge is fun" well sure, but you're not conveying that.

What had better career prospects? Which positions helps place you where you want to be in 3-5 years? Sounds like the one you turned down which you could have "used the move" and "the money" may have been a better option.

I recently had four job opportunities all at once, it was the first time in my life I felt like I could make a wrong decision on choosing a new career. I weighed my options, and chose the one that paid the best, gives me a 4x10 work week, and knowing the other three options couldn't TOUCH the offer that I was given. It also has a LOT of internal growth opportunities to move into management which by the sounds of their offer, they're grooming me for.

What did I turn down? A shorter commute, a "flex" schedule gives me a little more wiggle room with my schedule, and different research opportunities. Having to email an interview panel that you're turning down a follow-up interview due to accepting an outside offer is a good problem to have.
