If the public transportation system is on point , using it in spite of owning a car is a sign of higher civilization, you as a society are efficient and not wasteful.

If you want to, giving your seat to other people that might need it more, regardless of cause, is also a sign of a healthy society, because just maybe other people will do the same if you are in need, like getting a leg injury. In my city is not uncommon for injured young men to be given seats in buses if they have a visible condition (by elderly and women alike). It's about being civil.

It's not implied, or demanded, it's just a healthy habit for the whole city. And is a sign that the population is content.

But i do understand not wanting to do it if the transport system is an uncomfortable cluster fuck or if the local population is shitty. At the end of the day it's never something universal, it depends HEAVILY on the local conditions.

A vast majority of people in my city own a car, but many drive to the railway station and catch the train to work because it's cheaper. I've seen many pregnant woman on the train, some asking for seats but most already have hadsomeone stand up. I can't help but think if standing up for a while on the train is a problem, spend the extra money and just drive your car to work and pay for parking. It will only be for a few months.

Here in Brazil it's mandatory to give up your seat for pregnant women,disabled people and elders.I honestly don't mind giving up my seat for people in this condition,but I would never do it for non pregnant women.

I only give my seats to the elderly, crippled or situations with a parent and a stroller. Pregnancy depends how far along she is. Serena Williams won an Open when she was pregnant. Not like being pregnant makes them incapacitated
