~15% 401(k) match from employer.

~10% contribution to my 401(k) by me

~student loans fully paid off.

~ 15k in car notes for both my cars, 1 of them being new. I treated myself :)

~ $24k in savings & $20k in CC debt.

~ $300k Inheritance anticipated from grandparents

~ $140k / year salary + $15k in bonuses / year.

~ I try to eat right, sleep 9 hours a night, exercise and take care of my mental health.

Career wise - go into finance. Yes, finance. Work 1-3 years and move up, within 10 years, you'll be making over $100k. School either IS or ISN'T for you. If it's taken you a decade to get an associates in gen ed, school isn't for you. Don't waste time racking up student loan debt for a degree that has no career potential. Go into finance. Don't worry about doing what you love. You can do what you love as a hobby, on your personal time, with the exorbitant sums of cash they pay you from your cush finance job.

Do NOT intermingle your finances with a man. Don't tell ANYONE about how much money you make. Don't look well off, barely look comfortable. Don't show off anything about your life because your coworkers and boss won't see a need to promote you or give you bonuses. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, TELL FAMILY OR PARENTS HOW MUCH YOU MAKE. THEY WILL GUILT YOU FOR NOT TAKING CARE OF THEM AND BUYING THEM EXPENSIVE SHIT. Treat your income like your sexual past, ONLY YOU should know about it.

Yes I diversify but I don’t want to elaborate, don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.
I work in tech
I budget extremely carefully using ynab and I recommend everyone does even if you make more money than you know what to do with.
Not married, but I know it will be difficult to find a man who can keep up with my principles on finance investing and not taking on debt.
I probably won’t prenup
Yes, if you are in debt listen to Dave Ramsey and get out of it fast. I highly recommend YNAB for budgeting it is a really good tool to learn how to use money if you’re new to it. Next start investing in your future now, the younger you are the more your money will be worth later exponentially. Finally, it’s always easier to make more money than it is to spend less, focus on your career and make money moves.

Finances

Hey Ladies,

I have a couple of questions about how you all as HVW handle your finances.

1) Do you have Investments? If so what do you recommend.

If your employer offers a retirement plan, invest at least enough to get the match. For example, if the match is 100% up to 3% of your compensation, invest at least 3%. If its 100% up to 3, then 50% on the next 2, invest at least 5%.

I would, if you don’t have an employer retirement plan, open a Traditional or Roth IRA. If you’re in a low tax bracket right now, go with a Roth, and pay the tax on contributions now. If you’re in a high tax bracket, open a Traditional IRA which will reduce your gross income.

If you have extra $ to invest, over and above the Roth/Traditional IRA limit ($6,000 per year), I would open a brokerage account.

I invest almost exclusively in index funds. They are already diversified so you don’t have to follow individual stocks/companies. VTSAX is what my 401k and Roth are in. It is a “Total World Stock Market index” so it invests in companies from all over the world, instead of just US.

If you’re aggressive (being young helps), I have a portion in VITAX, an IT index fund. It’s up 36% year to date.

I would invest in low cost ETFs and mutual funds. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message!

2) What do you do career wise?

I work at a financial planning office :) I’m 24 and have got 36% in raises in just 2.5 years. I’m salary so I don’t have to fight for commission.

3) How do you budget?

If you’re completely new to budgeting, I’d look into Dave Ramsey. His system is really effective for paying off debt quickly, as well as avoiding going into debt.

4) If your married,how did you combine finances if you did?

I’m very single but I don’t plan on ever combining my finances with a man. I like to spend my money how I want, and I don’t want to have to discuss it with someone else.

5) Do you have a prenup?

See above.

6) Do you have any financial advice?

Always live below your means. Invest as soon as possible because the compounding effect of starting younger will beat out market returns every time. Even if the market only goes up 2% a year for the next 45 years, I will have $1M in my Roth by the time I’m 65 because I started young and saved aggressively. Do the same for yourself so you never have to depend on a man, even in retirement.

Not married but I would want to pool everything together and control the finances.

Have as many streams of income as you possibly can and you’ll never have to worry about money. Invest, invest, invest.
