I’m 24F and newly engaged to ‘my captain.’ When we started dating, I was a 19 yo college student and he was a 21 yo fresh off a couple years of sowing his wild oats. We did the same sport in college (bonded over that) and practiced the same religion (crucial for both). He graduated before me and has since finished his masters while working full time. After a couple years of long distance, I finally moved to another job closer to him this fall, we got engaged, and I’m planning a wedding for next summer and applying to grad school (to start right after we’re married). The point of all this backstory is that I’m grateful for my luck here and the foundation seems solid. I love him, am so proud of him, and think he will be a great partner and father someday.
The issue is the hamster (I think). If he is away on a business trip for a week or we don’t see each other for 3+ nights in a row because of our work schedules, sometimes all these frantic thoughts come to mind: should I move back across the country to be with my family? Am I too young to get married? (—intellectually I know I’m not, but none of my friends are married or engaged). Would it be easier to do grad school single? Will I regret only seriously dating one person?
These questions all seem silly and I hesitate to voice them to friends because I don’t want to embarrass myself or my fiancé. So RPW, what’s the difference between my hamster and a gut feeling? Is the hamster just feeding on anxiety here? Has anyone else ever felt like this?
