A lot of our culture is derived from the bible. God created man first, then a woman. So it would make sense.

Originally, the words were :. "Wereman", for male, and "Woman", for female. The suffix "man" simply meant "human". After many centuries, 'man' and 'woman' morphed into their current meanings. But the prefix "were" lives on in the word "werewolf", meaning literally "man-wolf".
