I don't, really. I just want to develop a skill for the hell of it.

It's not purely useless. It might be good to get a girlfriend from a traditional culture.

Necessity is the best motivator. Enjoyment is the next one.

I speak fluently in three languages, all due to necessity (except my mother tongue), but also enjoyment. So I would say, move to a country where it is spoken to work during christmas/summer, or study a year abroad if you are in university and can afford it. If you can't, find media (Youtube, books, TV shows...) in that language that you love, and that will motivate you to learn. For example, a lot of people learn Japanese because they like and consume a lot of anime (and probably hentai too) or English to be able to watch youtube videos and play games online.

What language do you want to learn?

Russian, ideally. Thing is I could never, ever work there since average Russian salary is like $500 a month.

I know it's enough to live on. As a Westerner, I just couldn't live with myself knowing I was working full-time making that amount of money.

I have a passing interest in German, and I know the German market needs people with IT skills (=me). Maybe I'll give that a shot instead. I'd like to die a multilingual man with a hell of a life story behind me.

Then go to Germany and work there. Or even better, go to the German-speaking part of Switzerland (they'll pay much more, things are also more expensive, but you still win). They say the German is different than Germany so take that into consideeration. Why that instead of Russia? Because at the same time you learn the language you get more experience in your sector and a satisfying salary.

If you are really interested in Russian, while you are in Germany /Switzerland start learning Russian. You will have no probem finding native Russian speakers in Europe. During holidays, go visit/work in Russia (it's a couple of hours by plane).

Have good reasons for learning it.

Just start.

A bud of mine who isn't real books smart speaks six languages.

When I asked him why, he said, "My parents always lived off base. If I didn't speak the local language, I couldn't buy groceries. Nothing like being unable to eat to encourage you to learn the language."
