The type of advice you want might depend on a few things. How old are you? How old are the women you're dating? What are you looking for? Where are you meeting these girls?

But over all I would say dinner dates are a terrible idea especially for a first date.

There's no easy escape. If she ends up being ugly and awkward you have to sit there until the check comes
They're too formal. Girls just wanna have fun. Dinner dates usually end up turning into something like a job interview or a business meeting where you just sit across from each other asking how many dogs she has
Eating is awkward for a lot of girls. They get self-conscious about what to order, then self-conscious about having someone stare at them while they put food in their mouth, all while trying to maintain a boring conversation
But mostly, I've had way too many female friends admit they go on dates just for the free meal. They're not even ashamed of it. They just put on a shit-eating grin and say, "Hey, a girl's gotta eat!" while all the other girls laugh.

If you're meeting someone from the Internet, the first date should always be coffee or drinks. It's a well-populated area and there's low comittment, so if she turns out to be an ugly, organ-stealing racist it's easy to bail.

If you want, you can always have more interesting things lined up for a second and third venue.

Personally, I'm into fucking Tinder girls, so going out for a drink then heading back to my place is a fun enough date for me.

If there needs to be more rapport, we can introduce venue changes. Meet for a drink, go for a walk by the river/park/play on the swings, stop and get tacos/ice cream/hot chocolate, head back to my place to play Sega classic/watch this funny YouTube video/try this new bourbon/thinly veiled excuse to make out.

If you want more fun/action things, go for a hike, walk on the beach, go bowling/putt putt/billiards/arcade, go for a motorcycle ride (cuddling at 90mph while vibrating makes her wet), go to a shooting range.

But honestly, girls love to talk. If you're an interesting person then sitting and having a drink will be fun for her.

If she wants to go to concerts or movies, usually she will make that suggestion. But at that point you're just sitting in the same room together and you're only with her because she didn't want to go alone.

I usually meet them over tinder. Depending on how we connect, I either directly meet to fuck or I go for a coffee or (prefered by me) a drink in the evening.

If the first date isn't a fuck date it is usually just for her to reassure that you are what you claim to be on your profile. Girls also have the same problems like us, that people use outdated fotos or lie about who they are.

Second date is at her place then, if we didn't fuck after having a couple of drinks.

Never ever do dinner dates so early, unless you are hungry and then you don't pay a dime for her.

I got different types of relationships. Some I keep solely sexual, but to some women I feel attracted on another level and I will also stay overnight, have dinner dates (where we split the bill) or do other stuff together. I am going a little bit with the flow and my gut there and I will balance those things with sex. If I sense some way of entitlement I will also revoke privileges and demoted them. I will also only do those things if I want to, and not if she does.

Attraction is a stretchable word for me. I also keep some girls in the rooster, who aren't too pretty, but have other qualities. One for instance is just a hand job and blow job goddess and the only woman to this date who can make me cum with sucking and stroking. She is also very uncomplicated and eager to please me.

Shoot pool, take a walk at a nice place then grab drink or food to go, even bowling is lots of fun if you just own it (I've been wanting to play for the past week, it's been a while balblabla).

Overall, be attentive to what she says about her interest. If something fits with yours (like music) then shop around for activities that you enjoy that she could also like (in that order).
