Whilst I loves the early seasons of HIMYM, I admit this season has been the worst. Aa s downright terrible. But that said, I think you misunderstand what the show has been about.

Ted is blue pill by design; Barney was created to be his counter; the red pill. Everyone on the entire show has called Ted out on being a major beta and an all around mangina. They constantly deride him about his delusional 'fairy tale' of 'falling on love with the perfect person.' Aka the Unicorn.

I know he ends meeting the said unicorn, but the show does have to appease the wider audience.

Also, don't forget it's Ted who's telling the story to his kids. Of course his hookups would be hot girls. Would you ever tell a story how you hooked up with Heffer from McDonalds?

The early seasons portrayed blue pill well, IMO.

How I Met Your Mother presents one of the strongest cases ever of "it was better earlier". Now, Ted has been bluepill as fuck since episode one. Lily comments in the first episode on his first date with Robin when he didn't kiss when her work called, verbatim "Aww! (Implying Ted is cute) So, you chickened out like a little bitch?" The decline of HIMYM is in railroading Barney and Robin into a relationship, making Barney into a magical character then destroying him, making up other ridiculous scenarios, and dragging the show on too long.

I watched the pilot and half of the second episode just last night. Couldn't get into it for the exact reasons you posted... honestly I don't see how it is as popular as it is?

Ted is fine as a character (need to have some shit to make the others look good). Every episode that "moves the story forward" AKA Ted and his future wife is shit.

Then just this season they show Ted's future wife and she is not even that hot compared to the others he could have had.

Anytime any one or anything makes you look forward to an unknown (for more then 10 sec) it will be a disappointment.

I agree. Ted is excruciating. He's this cartoon character of a male who has somehow internalized every chick flick and romantic comedy ever and thinks that's how life is supposed to be.

The other characters give some good laughs, or used to. But Ted's ruined the show completely. If they had not built the title and premise around him, they could have cast him off a couple of seasons ago and salvaged it. The only reason I still watch it is because Monday Night Football doesn't kick off until 8:30.
