Freedom leads to happiness. But it's not enough.

Another crucial ingredient - for me, at least - is putting my skills, knowledge, and talents to use. For example, it makes me happy to grow my business. Other men might rebuild cars. Others may write novels, songs, or screenplays.

If men spent all of their time in consumption mode - for example, buying stuff, watching Netflix all day, etc. - they'd probably be miserable. (You probably know a few women like this.)

I suspect men are hardwired that way.

Semi-related side story: I spent Christmas with family and friends. Conversation turned to what bores us. I said I haven't been bored since the 70s. And it's true. I'm always pursuing stuff that interests me. Reading philosophy, playing guitar, playing chess, playing poker, cooking, writing, growing my business, and on and on.

That's my idea of true happiness.

Yeah, it feels good to be liberated, doesn't it. To have your awareness expanded, to see and understand things you never did before. It's one of the greatest benefits of a mind that is open to learning.
