I agree. I'd argue that most atheists today aren't skeptics at all; they're sheep. Sure they call themselves atheists and parrot the same points they've heard online but the idea that there is no god isn't a conclusion that they came to. They heard it from someone on Youtube, and he had big number under his name so he must be right, right?

It's not popular to be religious anymore. I bet the majority of atheists today would've called themselves theists if they were born some decades ago. We like to think that because society has advanced, it's people have too but I'd be interested to know how true that really is is. The phone may be more advanced but it's the same dumb, hairless apes tweeting at me.

/Sunday morning, drinking a coffee ramble. This turned out really long, sorry.

As a former Christian > pagan/etc > militant atheist turned agnostic I think you might be letting anger and cynicism creep in. I'm quite happy to have found my spiritual side again, it doesn't need to be expressed in a woo woo way, for me it expresses itself as a deep feeling of connection to the universe. (ever done acid?)

Even as a hard-line empiricist, if I'm honest with myself, by the powers of logic I can see the overall chance of of a god being real is not zero, that is to say I cant provide proof of God's non existence. So while the chance may only be.0.000000~1%, its not zero.

So if a god or gods exists, my mind (and jump in logic) tells me it/they most likely wouldn't even be aware of us given the size of the universe, I would concede that this fact among many others places many limitations on any potential deity.

So these days due to my life long fascination with history and theology I've sort of started to resurrect (but not worship by modern definitions) the old Greek and roman gods in my mind. Thanks to some lost years as a pagan I can see how that sector of the publish industry is based on a few key modern misunderstandings of people back then, namely they where not stupid and had long standing, successful and functional societies. Most modern Western "believers" will get nothing out of ANY spiritual mindset because they miss the first step. Namely "drop" your ego. I've often commented one of God's only uses these days is to facilitate and justify the hedonistic culture around us, they often miss the more worthwhile and personaly fulfilling messages of compassion, respect and patience.

Which nicely brings me to (modern) mgtow, which I think best encapsulates this idea and brings a modern understanding of dropping your ego, something which the ancient pantheons recommended highly and was a core part of the doctrine. So for me "know thyself" does mean acknowledging my own feelings which do have a spiritual quality. The world of gods plays out for me like an on going soap opera with elements/gods of all parts of the universe playing an often indifferent role to my existence. The seamingly random cruelty which the universe spews fourth has now simply makes me laugh just as the Buddha so wisely suggests.

I was also a person who had problems with capitalism, but now that I'm older I can look at it from this historical perspective and see the modern world seams quite stable at the moment. I think Winston Churchill said it best,

"No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those otherforms that have been tried from time to time."

Then add a dash of Epictetus.

"Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our actions. The things in our control are by nature free, unrestrained, unhindered; but those not in our control are weak, slavish, restrained, belonging to others. You will lament, you will be disturbed, and you will find fault both with gods and men. Further, you will find fault with no one or accuse no one. You will do nothing against your will. No one will hurt you, you will have no enemies, and you not be harmed."

Capitalism isn't the problem as I see it, these systems enables its users, that is to say the system doesn't control its users. I believe the problem lies overall with the lack of education, or more basically in a general lack of curiosity in people, and the way in which people can find pleasurable sensations.

Don't listen to the doom pedallers, they have always existed through out written history, the world can be a positive experience depending on how YOU choose to view it. The stupid thing is I've spent 25 year reading a very wide range of topics only to find out that I was trying to hard, I didnt need external knowledge, what I needed was inside me the whole time and have to admit this misunderstanding has cost me a good chunk of my life. You really are the master of your own destiny (if you choose to be)

Atheism is worthless, and only leads to vagina worship and turds who believe in science without knowing jack shit. I'm not defending religion, don't misunderstand me, most organized religions are just as bad. #agnostic4life
