I thought I would go over my post covid filing experience from yesterday.

I have been wanting to file for at least a month, and yesterday had an appointment set up with the courts. The whole process took around 20 minutes, with some of that going through temp checks and being screened for Covid.

Due to Covid, the local library was closed, so I went to Michiganlegalhelp.com a couple of months ago and completed all of the initial paperwork. That was a pain, but only took about 30 minutes. There were no errors, and the documents were accepted. I was nervous about that aspect though!

What I noticed is that I was able to serve her myself with the papers, which happened last night. The court stressed that I could not physically hand her the papers, but had to put them down and then have her pick them up. Since that is complete, she has to fill out her portion, and can mail it back to the courts within a certain timeframe. I forgot what it is.

I did have a question if anyone has experience with real estate. We have been married for 10 years, and lived in our current home for three. I am on the mortgage and the deed. Does this mean, that if push comes to shove, I could sell the house and give her half the equity? Or is there something written that states I can’t sell property during a divorce? I don’t really want to do that, but she has said some things trying to shoot for the moon, and I believe that would be a good bargaining chip to bring her back to the table. Thanks for any input!
