At least in the US, the consequences for falling behind on making child support payments can be pretty harsh, especially if your ex is angry.

Since you are just in the 'considering' phase, please consider this idea - set up a secret account (or maybe a 'business account' or something that won't get split in the split) and attempt to squirrel away enough money to cover estimated support payments for 6 months or so. i.e. set up a buffer that will survive asset division that will smooth out the irregularities in your income and give you a buffer if things go badly.
