I call it the Slippery Slope and both ex-spouses can fall into this trap
Everyone experiences grief after a divorce, at least most do. Obviously, this is totally normal, you wouldn't be human if you didn't experience the full spectrum of emotions.
Stage 1 ~ Paralyzed
What often happens especially if you are a non-custodial parent is total shock This leaves one paralyzed, deer in the headlights and shell shocked to where conflict avoidance turns into people avoidance.
Stage 2 ~ Grief
In my experience, grief has two phases. First, your ex carries the majority of the blame. Second, it's your fault all of it. Obsessing with what you could have done, beating yourself up over minutia and trying to convince yourself you just suck. The grief stage is essentially bi-polar. Her fault, My fault, Her jobs fault, my jobs fault etc. It's mental ping-pong, and it's a waste of time and sleep. Every marriage has two participants, and every divorce has two people that contributed to the unraveling of the partnership.
Stage 3 ~ Depression
Grief can cause social isolation. Social isolation can cause depression. Grief and depression are two very different things. Grief is sadness that is situational. Depression is not. Depression is no longer about the divorce, custody or family court, it's summed up in one word Apathy!
Depression can lead one to become indifferent to what happens in the future.
Stage 4 ~ Major Depression
Depression turns into Major Depression like a theif in the night. Missing visitation with the kids or skipping your weekend with them. Sleeping to much or not at all. The albatross of this stage is substance abuse. 9 times out of 10 ~ Alcohol.
It's very easy especially for men to go from Stage 1 to 4 in the blink of an eye. What's important is to recognize no one is immune because it's all to normal. Divorce is tough and can send the strongest person to waver. You don't want to let it get to stage 4.
The main thing is to avoid social isolation! That's it! Social isolation is how you go from grief to major depression. So get out and interact even if it's chatting up a bartender. !

I came home from work to find an empty house. I mean no furniture, no pictures on the wall. Absolutely nothing. My kids gone which is all that matters and a crying wife that told me she's leaving.
I went through all those stages but didnt even realize that I went from depression to major depression. I spent most of the next six months alone in the dark basement bedroom of .y older sister. I had to sell our house so I stayed with my sis.
It was finally at the urging of my parents and siblings and my work to get professional help. My work paid for me to stay at a mental health facility. I never really knew how far down that depression hole I had fallen. That was over 10 years ago and thank God I'm far removed from it all.
I have 2 great teenagers and a great girlfriend and I've never been more free and at peace.

Your story is almost exactly like mine. I had two kids a home, dog, good job and marriage. Then everyone is gone, they moved to her home town and divorce is now iminent.
Furniture gone. Just a mattress and a bottle of liquor. It was cruel and I'm not surprised at all the high suicide rate of divorced men with children.
Looking back I'm glad we divorced. I would never in a million years treat someone like that. I wouldn't even do that to an animal.

I'm sorry you went through this as well. I agree I could never do that to someone.

She is, and know that no matter what, you have tremendous value and we can take control of our lives and choose how to be happy.

It’s a tough place to be in. Seek help however you can have it. Talk to friends, family, strangers - yes, strangers in a coffee shop will sometimes be very open and comforting.
But most important, from my perspective, never let your guard down. This happens to us because we’ve blindly put our trust in somebody. Never put a woman on a piédestal. I’ve learned that at 20, and though I went through tough times, that very idea gave me some safety net.
Stay hard! (David Goggins)

I have lost my job as well amongst all this.. and i have a hard time going through interviews with an unmotivated state. I have started hosting travelers though couchsurfing to avoid social isolation. That part is fun..
