I work in the mental health industry and was recently a graduate student in ‘counseling psychology’ at one of Canada’s most reputable universities. I have met people in this field who explicitly and openly identify as “anti-man”.
It perhaps won’t be surprising to many of you how anti-man (and frankly, anti-white) much of the training and ‘education’ was in this program, and how deeply biased nearly all professors, students and therapists are. I’m tempted to tell a few illustrative examples, but I honestly wouldn’t know where to begin, never mind stop. More generally, I can tell you that to most people in the mental health field, an individual man is seen as a representative of the oppressive patriarchy and is to be stood up against like you would a bully. Men are generally assumed wrong unless they’re agreeing with a point made by a female, and fragile and entitled if they express emotion. Not all in the mental health field are like this, but many, many are, to a greater or lesser degree.
Let me be clear. You absolutely do not want your therapist to view you as something to resist and conquer. At best, therapy will be a waste of time and money, but it is far more likely that this will be psychologically damaging, especially if you give your trust to a therapist maligned in such a way. And therapy can go nowhere without trust.
There are a couple ways to test out your therapist for such biases.
First, on their website, if there is much attention given to current social justice issues, you should avoid the therapist. Being committed to fair and equal treatment is fine, but if they’re branding themselves around social justice, then ideology will stand in the way of you and the therapists. Second, if they don’t have a primary therapeutic modality, or if their primary therapeutic modality is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or some social justice modality, then this is also bad. Finally, it is worthwhile to mention Jordan Peterson’s name to your therapist to see how s/he responds. Mention to your therapist that you don’t know anything about him, but you’re thinking of buying his self-help book. Peterson tends to trigger the anti-man therapists, and for that reason, can act as a screening tool. If a therapist is not triggered by Peterson’s name, this is a good sign.
