[–]d_nijmegen 92 points93 points94 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This is really really bad marketing thinking. And so blatently dumb

[–]RelativeBirdz 44 points45 points46 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, they have the approval of 100% of women and 80% of men like that.

[–]d_nijmegen 30 points31 points32 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But its sexist, so it's wrong!

-feminists (when it's about them)

Mother's day

[–]Sovereign-Eve[S] 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for that! I looked through my inbox and couldn’t find a Mother’s Day one. :-)

Mother's day: We understand it can be difficult...

Father's day: We know nobody even cares...

[–]SuperSupremeKai 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lol yeah. Even if they are acting equally by sending for both days, the content still leaks their true intentions.

I think we should just invert the purpose of Father’s Day. The assumption that all adults are thankful of their parents is almost suffocating. If you had a great dad, then sure, spend some time with him, send him a card. But if you’re a father totally dropped the ball as a parent (you know who you are), you should use the day to act like a “dad” - call your kids, tell them you’re sorry for all the fuckups, and that you care. Level with them, make an effort to connect, be honest...ya know...be a father. Just for a day.

[–]ImportantResults 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure! After single moms do the same!

[–]csgardner 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This seems odd to me. I know quite a few women who really hate mother's day because it makes them regretful and jealous that they don't have kids themselves. I've never met someone who gets depressed about Father's day.

[–]JasePearson 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I get depressed about Father's Day for a little while when somebody reminds me on the day (I can barely keep track of next week never mind all these "special days") because it reminds me of my father, or rather, lack of one..

Just give me a Parent's Weekend and be done with individual days, so I can celebrate people that actually raised me rather than either of the ones that left me.

[–]BrokeMacMountain 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now you mention it, a Parents weekend would be a fantastic idea! Certinly much better than induvidual days.

amazing i had not considered that before!

Except they did send one out for Mother’s Day. It was still really sympathetic to moms and neglectful towards dads but at least they gave a choice.

Their intentions were still kinda rotten though.

[–]RuleofThreeTAG 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup, I was just looking over my emails this morning and saw that shit. I don't remember getting one for mothers day either.

[–]User654124 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that's a bit insulting.

Anyway, time to buy some stocks of the competitors.

[–]JustAnotherRedditDad 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw that this morning and was a little surprised...

[–]Lice138 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but you know what’s going to happen right? At Father’s Day they will put out something along the lines of “we are celebrating all the women who are also the fathers blah blah blah hashtag women are fathers too”. Just like at the supermarket “hey you! Just round up to support breast cancer research “ but when it’s wounded warrior or prostate cancer “just hit cancel to go to payment options”. Which is why I’m glad they are being replaced with robots .

[–]owtbound 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was just about to post about this. I never got one for Mother's day, but I get one for Father's day? This is outrageous.

[–]Motherfly 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What the fuck

I literally just received the exact same type of email from shoprunner (whose emails usually go straight to the trash bin but the subject line made me say WTF): https://imgur.com/a/XbLk6Pt

I had never seen anything like it before so searched “opt out of father’s day” and equal results came up with articles reporting companies offering to opt out of Mother’s day.

However I noticed a completely different tone between the Father’s Day and Mother’s Day reporting. Articles regarding mother’s day gave examples of reasoning along the lines of “strained relationships,” “difficult/narcissistic/abusive personalities,” and also women faced with infertility. The ones covering father’s day mainly referenced fathers passing away with one focusing on suicide, and of course the whole “absent father” thing, which actually wasn’t touched on nearly as much as I assumed it would be.

That was just a quick run-down if the first page of search results as I didn’t read any further so it may have evened out more had I continued.

I saw that supposedly Shoprunner (the one I personally received) also sent out the same for Mother’s Day, but I searched my gmail, including the trash (I have the “auto-delete after # of days” turned off and never remember to empty it myself), and I didn’t receive it despite receiving all of their other marketing caca around that time. But I suppose that doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t sent to others.

Either way, if companies are going to send out this type of communication and provide these options, they really need to keep it simple and straightforward as opposed to insinuating anything and/or making their own assumptions so clear. In my opinion, getting the reason right could just be rubbing salt in wounds for some, getting it wrong could be downright insulting to others, and an infinite number of other possible combos/resulting reactions. (That sounded weird, but my brain is crapping out on me right now. Hopefully it made sense/you get what I mean.)

Every “holiday” has the possibility of being painful for any number of people and they have all just morphed in to marketing schemes, with everything in life also now possibly being offensive to some or just someone. Dancing on eggshells gets old, and no one ever executes these things on equal ground.

I mean I can’t say I’m surprised by seeing that from Etsy, don’t mostly women use that sight?

[–]sakura_drop 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The wording of this is really shitty. I've gotten these for both Mother's Day and Father's Day from one or two sites this year (I want to say Paperchase?) but it was from a perspective of "sensitivity" I.E. people whose parents are deceased or MIA. This is not that.

[–]YummyGummyDrops 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is stupid

They also sent one out for mother's day.

It isn't because they hate fathers. They send them out so people who have difficult relationships with/dead parents don't have to look at all the fathers/mothers day stuff

[–]SnooBeans6591 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's the moment when you opt-out of Etsy.

[–]Rockbottom503 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Vote with your money, just don't buy anything off etsy again. Send them an email explaining the reason for your decision if that makes you feel better :)

[–]Brilliantiti 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, who cares about those days anyway. I had quite a bad relationship with both parents of mine and I couldn’t care less if I get some mother’s day or father’s day spam.

The only thing is, if they decide to send out mails like this, they should at least do it on both mother’s day and father’s day. Otherwise it’s just sexist bullshit.
