So fucking stupid, the only reason the death penalty needs to end is because of shit like this. This useless piece of shit wasted millions and millions of tax dollars fighting her 1649 appeals before she was actually able to be put to death. Wayyyyy cheaper to just keep them locked tf up. This is always the case, this is why we need to do away with death penalties. Imagine more money than your life ever was worth being spent to fight the penalty you absolutely deserve.
[–][deleted] 54 points55 points56 points 5 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link
The real problem is the number of appeals. Give them 1 and if no new evidence is presented, take them to the chamber.
[–]jk_throway 49 points50 points51 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Until you realize that convictions have been overturned and innocent people released after MULTIPLE appeals were denied. A policy like this could needlessly kill innocent people. Just my $.02.
[–]a_vague_username 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
It's never gonna happen though so just stick em in jail. Being on death row is supposed to be extra cushy too compared to compared to regular prison. Fuck the death sentence. Have em suffer a life long in jail.
[–]alex137a1 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
but the taxpayers will boo at you - you see, prisoners need to be fed and clothed too
[–]SmurfMan94 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Not really. Give them a barely survivable diet of 1300 calories and take away freedoms such as basketball, weights, and other physical activities and only give them small amounts of social interaction and you’ll see how people will suddenly be afraid of going to jail again. Clearly people are no longer driven by the desire to do good so why not make them fear the consequences of their actions?
[–]Kyonkanno 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Human rights organizations would like a word or two with you.
Even prison labor is being frowned upon and you want to torture the inmates?
I mean, I agree with you but pigs will fly before this ever happens.
[–]smilesbuckett 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You’re missing the whole point. Death row inmates cost even more, even if they only spend a quarter of the time incarcerated before being executed because of all the legal costs in handling their appeals.
[–]wagglemonkey 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
execution is far more costly than life in prison, to the taxpayer

Would you even feel bad if a innocent person is executed? Or is that a sacrifice that needs to be made for like revenge or whatever
[–]Bolognanipple 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Lots of innocent people have been executed.
[–]gotbeefpudding 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
So that makes it... Ok?
[–]Bolognanipple 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Seriously? Come on man.
[–]gotbeefpudding 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
The guy asked if you would feel bad if an innocent was wrongfully killed and you just said lots of innocent people have died.
So can you explain to me why my question is worthy of a "come on man" ?
[–]Bolognanipple 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Your comment ridiculously implies I think it’s ok for innocent people to be executed. If you bothered to read usernames, the question wasn’t directed towards me- He asked someone else. I added to his question that lots of innocent people are executed. The original question was never answered.
[–]gotbeefpudding 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I think it makes sense that I got the impression I did. Not my fault you didn't word yourself properly.

Whatever dude. My comment has more upvotes than the question. Looks like everyone else understood.

You're assuming that defense and investigations would remain the same. I'm suggesting a new revamped judicial system. If there was any doubt then they wouldn't be on death row.
[–]Dazzling-Recipe 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Ohh what’s this magically justice system that never ever makes a single mistake ever ? Seems odd society hasn’t used that yet.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
You belong in Government, where everyone has zero ability to think creatively. So how about in Capital Murder cases, after a guilty verdict is leveled, the guilty person is given a two person team (or more, maybe law students to fulfill a practicum) to extensively review the evidence in an unbiased manner? Their conclusions go to a 5 panel judicial review for a vote. Any doubt takes the person off death row and/or a new trial.
How's that for a start?
All the above would be cheaper than 20+ years on death row.
[–]Dazzling-Recipe 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
So what’s the point of a trial?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
What's the point of multiple appeals?
[–]Dazzling-Recipe 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So innocent people arnt jailed or killed
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
If they are appealing they are already jailed.
[–]Grasshopper-88 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Been saying this since I was 15 years old and wrote a paper on it for my high school criminal justice class. Thats how obvious this is.
[–]just_some_guy8484 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
That's the thing. Most people think it's always cheaper to just kill them and be done with it. Once people realize the death penalty is NOT cost effective then things might change.
[–]supraman1994 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

How many more innocent people do you think would be wrongfully executed ?
[–]supraman1994 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Probably a lot, but I was also 99% kidding
[–]FuckRedditsADMIN 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
depends how you attribute cost, if the state killing someone brings publicity and hence preventative action in others who would have otherwise killed someone the cost is easily worth it and the cheapest option.
these things are almost impossible to determine, it doesnt just boil down into X is less than Y therefore Y is the better option in the short term.
[–]xwolfxk 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Completely agree that is waste of money and has no benefit regarding the safety of the general public.
But this is not the only reason death penalty should be abolished. There are numerous cases where people were given the death penalty and later found innocent.
[–]a_vague_username -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Unfortunately the system isn't perfect people are found innocent all the time looking at a case by case basis. I guarantee if we look at a statistic on it it is well under one percent. However this doesn't make it okay, but honestly if you ask me, if I was about to go to jail forever and I was completely innocent, assuming that I couldn't get the evidence to free me and I knew my options were death or life in jail, I rather be dead. I'm not a hardened criminal, jail is not for me, kill me and let God judge me lol
[–]SlowWing 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
what a retarded post
[–]jadehsu523 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So then its not actually the penalty that's expensive, it's the appeals process.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. On top of the numerous appeals, lawyers cost a ton more for death-penalty cases. Life in prison costs taxpayers significantly less than the death penalty.
[–]titan1034 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Why is execution so expensive? I always figured death row had the same cost of living of a life inmate, if not less due to no commissary or privelage like TV and other things to upkeep in the dayroom, and the process itself really only Costs the vial of drugs for the heart, electricity for the chair (which is already paid for) or a cost of a bullet and im imagining overtime for the officers who im guessing have to volunteer to be the firing squad, im not being sarcastic either I truly dont know much on this topic and want to learn more if anyone can help me out. I do agree the excessive appeals is a gigantic draw on state resources though but I figured appeals were 1 and done you win or you dont
[–]a_vague_username 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Dude people will be on death row fighting and appealing their convictions for years and years and years. Millions of dollars worth of resources on court spending. As opposed to once you got your sentence you can appeal maybe if some new evidence comes to light but otherwise you're pretty much stuck you do your time and maybe every couple years have a quick proceeding to see if you will be paroled. Death sentences just allow much more appeals apparently.
[–]titan1034 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Ahhhhh that would be a huge financial drag, as most probably use public resources, so the cost is all in these constant appeals really. Not the cost of incarceration itself im gathering? Thanks for the info btw! I've always been interested in this
[–]a_vague_username 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But even incarceration is very expensive. Where I live in NYC there was an article about ritkers prison and they were saying it's about 70,000 per year per inmate to jail someone. How crazy is that, even in nyc 70,000 a year....so long as you don't live above your means in some crazy expensive neighborhood.... You could live very comfortably with 70k a year. Now for a quick example, 70k times 60 years is 4.2 million. But millions will be spent trying to execute someone and that's not counting that while it takes years and years to finally get a date and execute someone you are ALSO paying the costs of jailing that inmate. Experts have spoken about this many times, it's always cheaper to jail for life than to have the death penalty.

im kinda conflicted about this one. on one hand, some people just need killing, and on the other hand i dont want to give the government another means to kill us. i mean the courts have been wrong plenty of times and have convicted many innocent people, once the govt kills you thats it. but if they threw u in for life, they can come back later and release an innocent man.
[–]BeerDrinkinGreg 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Plus, she was crazy, like padded room crazy, was she not? I'm not saying what she did wasnt heinous, but if I've heard correctly, she was mentally ill her whole life, but she just kept getting pushed out the doors because there are no facilities for the mentally ill. Plenty of prison cells though.
[–]MisterDecember 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
She was beaten and raped on a regular basis by every man in her life since childhood. One of her step dads built a “rape room” and confined her in it so his friend’s could have at her. Later her mother trafficked her into prostitution. She drifted into an abusive marriage and her husband gave her hell for not being able to have kids. Finally she snapped and murdered a pregnant woman and cut her baby out of the womb. Miraculously the baby survived. Hard to picture how any woman would have turned out if they had walked in her shoes.

You'll find that's often the case for criminals. Interesting factoid: the rate of traumatic brain injury in the UK prison population is around 40%. It's 0.5% amongst the general population.

Idea... purchase 10 square miles of Mexican desert along the border. Pick a state. We already built the wall, just extend it... put all the violent criminals, murderers, rapists, pedophiles there and let them sort it out themselves.
Do away with the cost of all that shit.

[–]Renaissance_Man- 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Damn, already lost her chin, now she loses her life.
Her story is very sad. She was heavily sexually abused and tortured. As a result of her abuse she had a large brain injury. This event could have been avoided if we had a special place for these human beings to be taken care of. Unfortunately be have no state mental institutions because of Regan era policies.
She had a problem that was not her fault, she was sick. What happened was preventable with social programs. What the justice system did to her was wrong.

I can’t get behind this. The woman was clearly insane, and I don’t like executing crazy people.
The argument could be made that keeping her alive is more beneficial to society because of her potential as a study case for psychiatrists.
[–]plainnsimpleforever 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, she did a terrible thing. But you only need to look at her life story to see how utterly tragic it was. Her life was worse than a horror story. She was 100% mentally ill. No question.

The death penalty is immoral, but so is the treatment of heinous murderers. Often, after only a few years, the murderer is released. Build more supermax prisons and put the murderer in solitary for the rest of their lives. No tv. No radio. No books. No paper or pens. Install a large LCD display on one side of the cell. Put pictures of the person who was murdered on a continuous loop. Revenge is a component of justice.
[–]Radamus1976 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'd say it's a start but evil women were executed at a far higher rate in the old days of frontier justice it seems. I could say that criminal punishment equality is better in countries like Africa since they necklace women along with men who murder, but they also burn women who they claim are witches so it's not really equality until they do the same to men who claim they are faith healers.
If true equality came to our criminal justice system, there would be many more women's prisons then there currently are or maybe a few less men's prisons from men imprisoned on trumped up convictions from false accusations of sexual assault and battery.

I was always just confused because outside of prison my yearly cost of living( besides medical for my liver disease) probably doesnt even come close to 70k, so what the hall are they spending it all on for someone to cost 70k locked in a cell? Not disagreeing at all i read something similar to that as well before but if they dont have any of the similar privelages and opportunities we do in the outside whats tge 70k? Id reckon they can survive off less than 30k, and should considering theyre in prison and all.
Why cant she take it on the chin like everyone else.....
