Ive paid for people whose cards have been declined before. Once two young boys wanted to buy candy but spent too long counting their money so i paid for it so i wouldnt have to wait any more. Once a girl wanted to buy tampons and got her card declined. When i offered to pay for it she ran away.

Of course, because the cashier whom is a very rich man judging by his job description would offer to pay for someone's groceries, just to hurry home, even though he has a schedule and goes home at the same time, regardless of how slow or quick he is at doing his job. What an easy to believe story

Actually, while the cashier does have a set schedule, he still needs to checkout all the customers currently in his line, have a manager count/remove the cash from his register depending on the store and then clear his work area before returning to the employee area to grab whatever stuff he came in with. All of which will significantly impact the time he leaves.

Where I leave if your shift ends at 18 let's say, you turn on your sign saying "last customer" at 17:55 so no more people go to your line, then you turn in your receipts and money tray to your supervisor and leave, the whole ordeal takes 5 minutes

Fair enough, back when I used to work security in a store, depending on how busy the store/manager was, cashiers could end up leaving up to 30 minutes after their scheduled time.

Generally around here you have to take care of any customers still in your line when you turn off the sign, and then make sure to tell anyone who gets in line after than you're closed.

Yes, however in my bussiness, if the last customer leaves at 8:05, that’s 5 less minutes I have to clean my store. Yes taking the money to the back takes a few minutes, but cleaning an entire store takes hours sometimes when you don’t have many people cleaning it. And we stay for HOURS after closing. Not every business is the same.

I've definitely had a single customer take more than 10 minutes because of declined payments/large order/coupons/other reasons.
The guy you're replying to is saying that if there are people in line, you're supposed to clear them out before you leave. That doesn't seem to be an entirely unreasonable expectation of a company as long as they're paying for the extra time. Our local Walmart has definitely swapped people out inbetween customers in the same line, though.
So.. yeah, 6 people in line, light on at :55, 3 minutes per customer plus 15 minutes for the first one, you're looking at 25 minutes of checkouts plus whatever EoD looks like for you...

I mean unless the last customer is someone who's card keeps getting canceled and you need to troubleshoot the issue for 15 minutes and you're suddenly 10 minutes late. I could see someone offering to pay something small to avoid that.

When I worked retail, cashiers generally clocked off according to their shift hours. If the store was busy, and they just needed extra help, they'd generally ask you to stay back and help clear the line if necessary but more often than not you'd end up staying back that 5 minutes because you weren't an asshole.
