Alex is telling me about the emotional fallout he experienced after repeated sexual violence at the hands of another student during his sophomore year at boarding school. Despite being a victim of sexual violence, when I ask Alex about the #MeToo movement, he says..."I definitely didn't think it was for me. Women have been oppressed for so long that the #MeToo movement felt more like a recognition by society of all the atrocious things women have experienced. As a male, I tell myself that it's not about me and that it's important for the spotlight to be on women."

Craig, who was raped by a woman at a house party, feels similarly. "#MeToo is a great movement, but I’d also feel kinda guilty co-opting it for male victims. Sure, there are problems [for men], but I feel like the focus is best on the most affected communities."

Peter tells me that he doesn’t think of #MeToo as being about men like him even though he was sexually abused as a child by two older teen girls. "Nope, this is "their thing,' meaning I see the movement as predominantly about women who have been used, coerced and manipulated by men of power. I see #MeToo as a movement to give a voice to women who have had their voices silenced for so long. What happened to me was bad too, but I'd feel very uneasy trying to glom onto their coattails."

I think all these men's attitudes embody that unfortunate self-sacrificing, "women's well-being first, even at the expense of my own" mentality that most men are indoctrinated with from birth. As well as men's outgroup bias towards women and against other men

The problem with the whole "yes, male rape victims exist. But this movement is for the women" is that there is nothing for the men. It's not "this is for women, this is for men, and men shouldn't invade women's thing". It's "this is for women, and men don't have anything at all"

I'll go as far as to say that, since there are far fewer resources for male victims than for female victims, male victims are the most affected community. It's at least as important for the spotlight to be on male victims of sexual abuse, as it's them more than women who have been and continue to be silenced

Most people acknowledge that rape against women is a serious matter that needs to be addressed. But there are many people--evidently, sometimes even male rape victims themselves--who don't see male rape as a serious enough matter to warrant widespread attention

What pathetic self loathing pieces of shit. It's kind of hard to feel sorry for men with that level of internalized misandry.

[–]Tank-o-grad 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's hardly their fault though, it seems gynocentrism is hard wired into human brains and that has shaped a society that reinforces it in a vicious feedback loop.

Indeed your reaction belies your own "internalised misandry" as you are villifying these men for not expressing their agency

pathetic

and then going on to excuse yourself from empathising with them because of it

It's kind of hard to feel sorry for [them]

Just an observation.

I agree with you to some extent, but at the same time men can't expect society to give a shit about us if we don't even give a shit about ourselves.

[–]Tank-o-grad 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed, so it is on us who are enlightened to the truth of this to lead by example and give a shit about ourselves and every other man and boy whether they give a shit about themselves or not. If they see that we care they may see that they should care too.

Self loathing and inappropriate guilt are common symptoms of rape trauma. We are a social species and sexual abuse can send an overwhelmingly powerful social message that we are worthless and deserve our abuse. I don't think that is the primary problem with these guys but it could be exacerbating it.

I think these two are over-applying some feminist principles about men staying out of the way and not distracting from women talking about their lives. But third wave feminists generally are fine with men posting MeToo in good faith.
I have only seen a few feminists object, I suspect they were rad fems. Also women who don't understand how males can be victims of women are naturally sceptical, but that becomes a good teaching opportunity.

Also there can be confusion with the fact that some men disingenuously use abuse of males as a distraction when women try to talk about abuse of females. These guys are not doing that but they may be scared of being accused of it. MRAs can help with this, by abstaining from this obnoxious practice.

They should start #MenToo

[–]Tank-o-grad 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

They should or we should?

[–]JustJamie- 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Male sexual assault victims should. I'm a woman so I don't think I should be a part of that.

[–]Tank-o-grad 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If you know a male sexual assault victim you could encourage him to speak out, if you see one speaking out without the hashtag you could reply encouragingly and include the hashtag there. This goes for all of us in the MRM not just you, nobody else is going to fight for men and boys to be heard so it's on all of us.

I don't know any

[–]awsdlefthandbutton 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You do, they just don't shout out about it. Not to mention that the people I know in that situation really don't want to talk to a woman about it.

Having heard some women laugh to guys about them being abused by women why should a man trust a woman?

[–]ImpulsiveLeaks 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a victim of sexual harrasment (harrasment, not assault) where people in my school think it's ok to make sexual jokes at my expense tbat make me uncomfortable. I'd love to have a female advocate, if any at all, to defend me

[–]JustJamie- 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course. People need to open their minds and hearts. Sexual assault can happen to anyone by anyone.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I imagine #MenToo has existed on Twitter at least since the big flareup of #MeToo when Weinstein was successfully accused. Most men post on #MeToo though.

Similarly more men post on the ungendered /Rape sub than on /MenGetRapedToo

At the level of online support I haven't noticed a difference in the kind of problems faced or support given apart from obvious stuff.
