I've been mulling over an idea or perspective for a little while, and I thought I would share it with you all in case anyone finds it interesting, or in case it starts discussion. In any case - I am trying to solidify the idea in my own head. I would be happy for input.

Many of the `awards' that are given out by our society can be viewed as bribes. How do you get thousands and thousands of men to fight to their death in wars? You build them statues, and you honor the dead with parades and so forth. You make them heros! How do you get men to stick around and provide resources to their children? You name their wife and children after them. How do you get them to work until they drop dead? You give them access to promotion up to the highest ranks.

If you walk through the streets of a city, you will see the names of men on street signs, and you will see statues of mostly men. One perspective is that we live in a patriarchy that puts men at the top. Another perspective is that these signs are the carrot that our society has always dangled in front of men to make them work. Notice though that the majority of people don't get the street signs and accolades... they just get the work, and the death.

Look at how we treat even 6 year old boys who `give up their lives' for their little sisters:
