The Evil Dead is an amazing series, and it’s all about Ash, played by Bruce Campbell.

Be advised, the first film was supposed to be funny and scary, but it was not scary. It looks shitty on the surface, but just know that the campiness was intentional. The sequels fix it and make it a better mix between the two. And it has a TV show.

Misery is a good one with reversed roles.

Novelist Paul Sheldon crashes his car in a Colorado snowstorm while driving west to celebrate finishing his latest book. His legs shattered, he is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a former nurse, who takes him to her isolated house in the countryside. She claims that she is his No. 1 fan and loves his Misery novels, as well as their main heroine Misery Chastain. However, the next Misery novel is released while he's in her care, and Annie finds out that Misery dies at the end. She becomes enraged, and forces Paul to write a new novel that undoes Misery's death. Paul, being too injured to leave her house, is totally dependent on Annie, and so begins his fight to find a way to write Misery back to life, all while Annie subjects him to all manner of deranged (and sometimes horrific) ministrations.

The comment section on this question provides many examples of male leads in horror movies, the difference you may be trying to discern here is why you can only think about the ones where a woman is the protagonist.

The difference is how they are marketed. Movies with a female lead lately are marketed around that female lead. Horror movies with male leads are marketed around the fact that it’s a badass horror movie/story because capitalizing on the lead actor in a male led horror movie doesn’t gain any ticket sales whereas capitalizing on a woman in the top billing slot will net increased ticket sales.

Alternatively, movies are marketed based on what was best about them. So if you see an ad for a movie where the unique selling point is “this person is the lead!”, then you are in for a shit movie.

To wit: most of Steven Segal’s filmography.

The recent string of movies that had a unique selling point of “female ensemble cast remake of established popular property” turned out to be crap, because they spent more time pushing a feminist agenda than making a well written or directed movie.

Credit where credit’s due, however, I liked Ocean’s 8. I thought that one was done right.
