I can probably answer this as I am a physician. Males tend to pick specialties that are more exposed to corona and are currently working the front lines (ER, ICU). Furthermore, the specialties most likely to get redeployed since their elective cases are canceled (e.g. general surgery, ortho, etc) are also predominantly male. On the other hand, more females are in specialties like pediatrics and OBGYN, which tends to be more protected from corona.

I'm a guy and im an OBGYN. We send all suspected covid patients to the covid team. We also won't get "redeployed" outside of our specialty because we need to cover our own L&D.

Wonder how much of this is based on Dr speciality. Those working the ER and ICU are facing a much higher risk

I read this in r/Corona and wanted to post it here.

Curious what spin this will get, to justify the victimhood of "womyn". Btw. The ones complaining are most like not those that are affected anyhow: genderstudy graduates tend not to work in useful positions, such as hospitals.

That's actually so true and so funny.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

r/Corona is just another bias reddit trash sub, always twisting the truth.

[–]LegendaryEmu1 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Weird that I only see how women need relief and donations and help during the wuhan virus situation. If men make up less than a quarter of those on the front lines, but are half the deaths, you'd think that would tell people something.

I'm sure they twist it to say 'WOMEN ARE THE MAJORITY OF PANDEMIC DEATHS, *GASP*!' At least in the UK, we already know thats not the case in China(even though they are actively lying about their numbers) and Italy among other places.

[–]Raborne 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are a few things that go into this. These are all generalizations. Men are less likely to "Feel" sick when they are. Men are less likely to seek medical attention for any condition that women. Men are more likely to shrug off fatigue from sickness as "just being tired." These are just some common problems men face, and 90% of it isn't their fault.

[–]DanteLivra 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's so many wives that are gonna loose their husband.

Women are really the ones getting the worst part of this pandemic.

[–]Oncefa2 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Won't somebody think of the women and children???

Like we don't do that enough already.

[–]Micsuking 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I get that this is a sad thing. But is COVID sexist or something? It's not like anyone is at fault here for this...

It's just a fact that professions (EMT, Surgeons, etc.) that are put on the front lines against the Virus have a majority male work force.

Reverse the gender disparity and almost all health services would have either banned female doctors from working with Covid19 patients or there would be some sort of extra protection/testing in place based on gender, just as we're seeing with race in some places.

[–]Micsuking -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is there anything to support this thought? Like have they done something like this in the past? Gendered Special Protection, i mean.

[–]JohnKimble111[S] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The treatment guidelines in the UK even assigns an extra risk point to male patients becasue of their gender - and reach a certain number of points and you don't even get to go on a ventilator. So if this applies to denying treatment to patients due to their poorer outcomes/risk then it has to apply to protecting staff too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I read they ended up not implementing that.

[–]Micsuking 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Jesus. Did the give a reason why male patients are a higher risk? Or is ot just straight up discrimination?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are about 1.6X more likely to die than women of Corona so why is it so much higher for doctors?

[–]TheTuskegeeAirman 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd only wonder why this didnt come up on NYT along with the article about "How blacks are unfairly getting corona"

I feel like this sub has been turning into a: "haha women bad bcoz men die more hahahaha" kinda place.

[–]JohnKimble111[S] 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

No one here hates women. If there’s any target for hostility which should stem from this article is the woke NHS managers (male and female) who prioritise BAME staff for testing and concern whilst failing to do the same for men despite them being more at risk.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And this post is evidence of that...how?

[–]AleksandrosIII -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This post is not about "mens rights." It's just saying men die more because of Covid-19. This could be age, this could be more men working. It has nothing to do with "their female colleagues."

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We don't exclusive discuss legal inequalities. We also talk about social/cultural/medical issues that affect men, and how in some cases, men have rights on paper, but not in practice, or how society fails to act equitably when men face certain issues. We're a general men's advocacy group.

Take the name 100% literally and you'll miss out on a lot of important material.

Also, you seem to be the one requiring that this post blame women, even though that's simultaneously your grievance. The article's title mentions female colleagues because it's literally the truth. How else would you possibly communicate this?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No one said it was the female doctors’ fault.

[–]PeanutButtHer 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This guy posts an article stating facts and you took it as an attack on women? That’s wild boss.

[+]AleksandrosIII -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You took what I said as me attacking this article for attacking women? That's extraordinary! Proceed, please.
