Females cheat, it's hard-coded into their brain. They call it "exploring my options". Sociably women want the best security for them and their off-spring. So when they see a male with higher social ranking and more financial security they will naturally gravitate towards him. It's just how their brains work.

Women only have 1 reproductive strategy- high investment- because they have a very limited amount of children they can have, it means they have to work very hard to make sure those offspring survive so they can pass on their genes.

Men have 2 strategies they can adopt- high investment as with women, or low investment- knock up as many women as possible.

Now obviously the second strategy is a lot harder in the world of birth control- but tell that to the million year old lizard brain we have that has influence over our actions.

Additionally- women while they are pregnant in particular are much more fragile- they are much easier to injure than men are.

So- evolutionarily speaking- it makes sense that women would be more likely to become attached to a man and want to keep him around as a provider and as protection whereas our male ancestors could have been high or low investment contributors.

Just for those that dont know, the biggest difference between men and women from our evolutionary behaviour, is that our genes propogate in completely different strategies.

in theory a highly successful male can replicate his genes in an almost "unlimited" manner (e.g Genghis khan), i.e a high risk high reward payoff, women biologically are not capable of the same thing.

hence male and female behaviour generally shapes around the most optimum gene propogation strategies, men are more prone to seek high risk high reward payoffs, and women seek security and reliability.

Women all know that their offspring will carry their genes, Men do not know that their offspring will actually be theirs, hence attitudes to faithfulness and promiscuity are different between the sexes also.

in simple terms in general men seek loyal loving non promiscous women in which to build a stable commited partnership with in which they invest their resources and care in, and women seek stable secure and provider style men in which to do the same.
