Everytime something like this pops up on Reddit, everyone says that "women and children first" is no longer practiced and that it only happened on the Birkenhead and the Titanic.

A while back I did some research and, yes, it is still commonly practiced, even though experts in disaster relief advise against it (it slows down evacuations and separates families).

For example, last year, when a plane ferrying military personnel and their families slid of a runway into a swamp in Jacksonville, Florida, women and children were evacuated first. I wonder how female military personnel are treated in a situation like that. Do they get evacuated first with the women or do they have to stay with the men?

Let's read it again. Persons and person first ? On sinking ships it's every person for personself. Despite personry seen onboard Titanic persons usually fare better then persons when marine disasters strike.

Now for real. So the women and children were the family of the officers!!! And these officers sacrificed lower ranking men so their own investment could survive ? No shit this is happening since the dawn of time. In those other studies it would be nice to see which children and women had a higher survival rate if their own father and husband were onboard. Because I will save a child but I will not sacrifice myself so random woman can live and I can die. Even more if I have children and maybe a wife waiting for me to return and put food on the table.

It’s women and children first so that the men can get some god damn peace and quiet so they can figure out what needs to be done to save everyone or just so that they can die in silence!
