It's a bit complex, though:

In 2006 a then 15-year old girl reported a rape.

In 2015 the police somehow identified and arrested the presumed perp. It's unclear why it took nine years. At the day of the trial, the then ~26 year old woman admitted that she had been lying about the accusation for the past nine years: it had in fact been consensual - and entirely legal, age of conscent is 15 in Sweden. At that point the accused man had spent seven months being arrested while the trial was being prepared.

The woman was sentenced to 16 months of prison for the crime of false accusation and was ordered to pay some laughably small monetary amount in damages ($8k).

To clarify: There's nothing suggesting there was any substantial age difference between the two parties.

No shit, seriously? Well whomever did that sent a clear message, don't falsely accuse someone. Rape bad, sending someone to prison for a crime they didn't commit is also bad.

How cruel of her to keep using the state as a weapon until the court case. She could have come clean any time after the original lie.

If the only reason she was arrested and he was released was her guilt that she confessed. I don't think there is any uplifting news here fellas, but on the contrary. Arresting a guy for 7 months on false bases without conviction for an "alleged assault" 9 years ago, wtf ?

That is progress, but on the flip side, it might prevent women who have lied from coming clean, which will be even more unfair to the accused.

Before I read the article, let me guess. The woman wasn’t hot. I’m gonna be baffled if an attractive woman ends up with this kind of punishment.
