Part of the reason the right to vote was restricted to men for so long is because only men were permitted to fight and die for their country. Therefore, men should have the say in who they elected to potentially send them off to die. When women got the right to vote, they got the ability to elect a leader without having to worry about dying for their country. In other words, they got what women always want: The power without the responsibility.

Here's hoping that responsibility finally catches up with them.

I never thought of it that way. In effect, women get to vote for who they want to send men off to war to die.

Welcome to the frontlines, ladies.

I hope not. I've been there. Do you know how much longer shit takes to burn if you pee in it?

Sorry for the crappy title, I though the article title would be included with the link.

A Federal judge in Texas has ruled that only men being required to register for Selective Service (the draft) is unconstitutional now that the U.S. allows women to serve in combat.

Yay, feminism!

What can I say, equal rights, equal fights.

Ohh if we want equal fights we are going to need some discrimination.

I wonder how r/feminism would take that news

They're a left-wing subreddit, so they'll just say some "anti-imperialist" shit like "do away with the draft."

Actually, they could be happy about it too. The mods are neolibs.

we should do away with the draft, we can clearly sustain our military without it

[–]srsh10392 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But people are only drafted during wars right? We don't need to scrap the draft, cause a draft rarely takes place. Keep it around, only take out a draft when the country faces a critical threat, and keep it gender equal.

What happens then in the event of an actual serious war with a peer nation, say if China invades? Our military is nowhere near large enough to take on a situation like that.

Fair is fair.

Any of you 18? What ever came of this? Have any men refused to sign up for Selective Service, and if so what legal action has been taken?

I'm exempt, I'm 60 and did my 8 years.

Just curious.

If you do not check the box when you turn 18 there is no penalty. However; until you check the box, you are not eligible to work for the federal government nor are you eligible to receive any federal student loans.

[–]TahoeCommie[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It has been 18 years since I had to check that box, but at the time you were ineligible to vote/register to vote in federal elections if you were of age and not registered for the draft.

Pretty much registering to vote automatically put you in the Selective Service.

[–]SteezySpliff 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think when I did it (12 years ago) there were two separate boxes. One for voting and one for SS. But who really remembers?

[–]TahoeCommie[S] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was registered from 18 to 25 as legally required, and I support Selective Service being a thing.

I am 36 now so no longer qualify for a draft, but if we got into a big enough conflict I am still young enough that I'd consider joining a service voluntarily.

just know that soon women will be on draft boards and hand out PPs deferments. (source: i served on draft board 8 years)
