I think its worse now. Its more "PC" and sanitized for the current era, but the misandry back in the 90's wasn't "every single man is waiting to rape the shit out of you" like it is today.

You could actually pick up a woman on an elevator or subway.

Absolutely. They're more brave and more open with it, they in fact have built an entire industry on it that only now seems to begin to falter. (Think Disney Star Wars.)

Definitely now, although that depends what you mean by 'watching TV'. In the 90's, network television was pretty much it, and at that time it reflected a much more traditional view of men, of providers and doers and protectors. Starting around then, men were almost universally presented as being stupid in commercials - or rather, if someone in a commercial was stupid, then it was invariably a man.

But now, with Hollywood and Netflix and HBO pretty much having to write content that caters to the female-good male-bad pattern, it's just everywhere. Men stupid, men evil, men dangerous, bumbling. Women competent - pretty much always beyond anything that actually happens in the world, women good, etc.

I liked 'Orange is the New Black' for a while - the characters are pretty interesting. Then I realized that every man on the show was a shitbag. Every last one, in varying degrees, without exception. And while some of the women were in prison because of their own actions entirely, a significant portion were there because of men. It's fairly low-key, no character stands up and goes on a rant about men, but every man, even the sympathetic ones, are weak, or they use women in various ways, or they're abusers of various kinds. All of them, every one.

And that sort of thing is really widespread, and growing. It wasn't the case in the 90's.

Now, but you can see plenty looking back. There's a moment in Friends where Ross talks uncomfortably about his girlfriend, essentially, though not phrased as such, raping him in his sleep. Cue laugh track.

It's probably worse now (like you, I gave up on TV in the mid 00's). But we were more vulnerable to the anti-male messages in the 90's - we watched what was scheduled for us, and even if we weren't watching it alone, we were taking it in alone - we didn't have access to bloggers and online communities to help us pick out the anti-male themes.

I've watched TV for 3 decades now, but my context is Indian. I see no difference in the misandry broadcast, except for the modes and ways in which they do it.

They are much more open and obvious with their misandry now, in my opinion. Back then it seemed more limited to tv commercials, but now it seems that all media is affected.
