How to avoid Gillette

I switched to Schick. They're cheaper than Gillette, stocked at all supermarkets here, and I'm finding they actually shave better than Gillette did. Plus, you can get them on amazon.com.au if you want.

I've recently switched over to using a regular old safety razor. It takes practice, but I quite like it. There's a definite happy feeling associated with shaving like my Granddad used to.

You might have trouble getting blades. Local supermarkets (California) have every variety of Gillette multi-blade cartridges and a few Schicks, but no regular razor blades, don't know why. Local pharmacies had some but I ended up buying blades on Amazon. They're cheap. I did not buy Gillette blades.

Warning: shaving with a safety blade takes practice and you'll cut yourself a little the first few times. Not badly, but just badly enough to make your neck look like a war zone for a day or two.

After I saw that ad I got myself a safety razor (unused vintage one from the 1960s for extra coolness). I make sure the blades are not associated with Proctor and Gamble. Beware that here in Australia Wilkinson Sword blades are made or distributed by P&G so choose ones that are free of that association. These razors work great. You'll never look back.

I turned to the only other option available where I am, Bic (the disposable head model is called Easy Click). I expected them to be pretty bad, but they turned out to be pretty good, and about one fifth the price of the Mach 3 I was buying before. The blade itself is quite good, its just that the head doesn't swivel as much as the Mach 3. Don't know if they're available in Oz.

Safety razor my dude. And get some good shaving soap with a brush and aftershave. Makes shaving much less of a chore and something to look forward to.

For those in Oz who want to avoid Gillette and have moved to DE safety razors, I recently discovered that Astra are made by Gillette. What a shame.

Sorry, you'd asked about brands. The blades I bought are Shark brand. I did a few Google searches on razor blades and Shark came in pretty high, as did Feather.

To complete the Granddad experience, you could go with Wilkinson Sword or Personna.

To answer your question, I would strongly recommend safety razors which use double-edge (DE) blades. I too don't shave much and this was by far the best option for me economically and environmentally. I also transitioned away from Gillette on principle. What a disgusting ad! And what a delight to see the company suffer an $8-billion loss. Karma bitches!

Going back on topic, I started out with a cheap plastic beginner razor made by Feather. It is $20.99 at Amazon AU at the moment so it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

It comes with Feather 2 blades. Just make sure you watch YouTube videos and read about wet shaving for beginners. Join r/WickedEdge for some good advice. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time when you start out and don't rush. It's totally different to 'normal' cartridge shaving and it's infinitely better. Good luck mate!
