They’ve just been discussing this on BBC news with Jess Tye from the ASA and I can see that there was just no winning with this and the VW ad. Both parents will still do these roles but we are getting to the point where we can only show men cleaning and women fixing cars (and have I just stood in it by suggesting this?). I’d like to see what others opinions are on this in the real world.

JT:Showing hapless dads is stereotype- BBC: [Philadelphia] chose men so that we didn’t show mums caring for the children. What’s the harm of using the hapless dad character for a bit of humour in the same way a comedy show would.

JT: Lady reading a book with pram is stereotype esp when men appear elsewhere in ad- BBC: [VW] chose this to show that looking after a child isn’t always stressful. If they had put a man in that spot I’m sure there would have been complaints about an all men ad.

Can't wait for men using makeup and lips gloss ads xD

I’m waiting for the tampon and viagra ads to switch.

Good. When they announced that they’d be banning negative stereotypes there was backlash on here but I hope those people see that it’s a positive step. It’s not that it’s offensive per se, it’s that it feeds into people’s internal beliefs that men are not capable parents which they absolutely are

I agree completely. Need to start showing more images of good dads.

It's humorous.. let's not turn into feminists by being offended at everything. It pales in comparison to the Gillet ad those fuckers not getting another cent out of me.

The joke is that men are incompetent at childcare, which is a strong cultural thing that causes fathers out with their kids to be treated as abusers.

let's not turn into feminists by being offended at everything

It's too late for some of us. I do not like the way the system dictates to us what's right or wrong. Yes, it may be seen in favour of men this time around, but in the long run, this is going to harm all of society. It will get expanded, like every other anti-free speech law/regulation. This is dangerous territory in my view.

Be careful of ofcom. In the end this will bite us all in the ass.

As to the advert, it was harmless comedy. Getting it banned is so wrong in so many ways. We are bloody adults and not children.

Actually, showing men as incompetent has long lasting effects and should be taken seriously. The current acceptance of misandry didn't come out of nowhere, it came from years of men being seen as incompetent on television. Repetition works over many years.

It's funny that when we see progress there are always the stoic types who come out to say 'let's not be like the feminists and be offended by everything'. Being stoic is what got us into this mess.

Hey dude, let us enjoy this small victory.

The companies that do this need to be punished hard financially.

Drive them into bankruptcy then they'll learn.
