I am guessing most people here have already thought of this, but I wanted to post my thoughts on this subject in case anyone might find it helpful.

An argument that a lot of people make to try to dismiss MRA activism against false accusations is to ask what is special about false accusations of sexual crimes as opposed to any other types of crime.

Well, one thing that is different is that there is a much bigger stigma when it comes to sexual crimes. With other types of crimes, once the criminal has served their sentence, they are more or less considered to have paid their dues to society. But since an increasing number of jurisdictions are requiring people convicted of sexual crimes to register as sex offenders (sometimes for life) and notify residents in every neighborhood they live of their status, there is a much greater level of stigma and fear associated with having a person who committed sexual crimes living nearby.

Now obviously a person who has had a false accusation levied against them and is not proven guilty will not be required to register as a sex offender, but the point is that once a person has this stigma attached to them, even if it is by way of the rumor mill rather than actual proof in a court of law, there is going to be considerably more effort required for the person to restore their reputation in the eyes of the community as compared with other types of crime. Many people are coming to think of sexual crimes as being a special category of crime that requires a higher level of ostracization from the community than other crimes. My point is not to say whether or not this is the correct way for society to handle the issue, but rather to point out that these are the facts.

Adding to that, the rhetoric of the #MeToo movement has been increasing the drive for many in the public to make a quick rush to judgement whenever a man (especially a powerful one) has been merely accused of committing a sexual crime against a woman.

We are not seeing anything quite the same with other categories of crime, so that is why it is necessary to single out false accusations of sexual crimes as a unique case. False accusations of sexual crimes have a significantly greater ability to damage the accused's reputation than other types of crime.
