Tips for job hunting?

It's rough. My go-to is indeed, but best job I've got nearly two years in is because of my aunt's friend's friend. Really is who you know. But then once you're in you're in I guess. First one's the hardest. And almost always part time. Woo! Modern economy!

Have an awesome LinkedIn profile, get the free month of job seeker. You can automatically apply to jobs using your profile lots of times.

Have a 1-page resume, formatting is important. Education (include relevant classes to job) -> Work Exp -> Achievements/Honors/Organtizations

Write a base cover letter and tailor it to each company you apply for.

Think of it like a shotgun blast. Apply everywhere even if your qualifications aren't quite there. One of the pellets is bound to hit.

A few tips from someone who's been laid off twice and found a better job each time...

No matter what anyone else tells you, have a one-page resume. You shouldn't have more than one page if you have <10 years of experience
Your resume is a highlight reel. It should reflect results you have achieved, not the tasks you performed
Network, setup informational interviews. I've cold-messaged people in LinkedIn working in industries I was interested in with a moderate success rate
Have the mindset that your employer is hiring you to solve a problem or fill a need, not to give you a job
To prepare for interviews, google basic HR behavioral interview questions. They're all largely the same from company to company. Script answers for them, then record yourself rehearsing them.

Update your linkedin profile and see if you don't have any local marketers or similar position networking meetups in your area on meetup.com .

The best way to learn how to become the type of people you want to become is to go out and meet them especially in a social context . Just keep it light , Everybody enjoys entertaining the excited newbie but no one wants to be grilled during their off - hours . So yeah if there are any local marketer networking groups you should check them out and maybe it'll give you a view of the local landscape .

Marketing

Don't fall for scam "sales" jobs which are actually multi-level marketing schemes or selling knives door-to-door. When you get to one of these interviews, where they brag about the company but they're vague about what they actually do, you'll know what I'm talking about and start to filter them out.

My advice would be to specialize in something. For instance, if you set up a website on your own and got good SEO and good visitor numbers on it, you'd really stand out against the competition. Give them NUMBERS on what you've accomplished, and they will notice. Always be quantifying.

I also think it's the little details that get you the job; I taught English in Warsaw over the summer, I put that on my resume and my current employer turned out to be a Polish company. It gave us a topic to talk about, and I got the job. Maybe you've got a similar hobby or volunteer thing which you might think is total bullshit, but which might make you more interesting to the interviewer.

Making a personal connection in the interview is huge. A big consideration when you're hiring someone is "Do I want to be around this person for 40 hours a week?". There's lots of routes you can go, just avoid self-deprecating humor.

Honestly? Ask your friends about their jobs (preferably guys a year or two older than you) and whoever has the best one apply and ask for them to be a referral.

Pretty much all legit companies give between 1 and 5k for a referral.

Out of school one of my friends (who is now one of my top 3 best friends) had a pretty good job and I applied and he gave the support to the boss.

Then we referred more people. Pretty soon they completely stopped hiring almost entirely aside from referrals.

And like half the people that worked there were either my fraternity Brothers or friends.

Then when some of us got promoted or got a better job elsewhere guess what we did? Refer the guys who had been crushing it in the past job.

Within like 5 years I had a huge network of people.

Look at who you know and see if they're able to help place you or get you in conversations with people who are in the position to hire.

I would also consider looking at your school for career placement help, look at career fairs held at your school, etc.
