My wife is a very practical person, which is one of the reasons I love her. But she absolutely hates books in every way. She hates reading. She hates reading to our son. She hates that I love to read. She rolls her eyes when she sees other people reading. She constantly gives me sh*t for reading; hides my books, nagging me,”what do you get out of it? It’s so lame? You look like a nerd?”
She thinks reading is a total and complete waste of time. She is a person of action and when she sees someone reading she just thinks they should be working.
She’s an intelligent well rounded woman, college educated, witty, great career, she’s just absolutely hates books.
Any ideas on how to change her opinion on reading?
I’ve tried buying her books on topics that she’s interested in. I’ve tried buying us the same book so we could talk about it together. Nothing works.
She just hates books. When she sees a book store she literally says,”yuck” and walks the other way.
I’ve really tried to pin it down on why she hates books. The closes we’ve got is that she works a stressful high pressure job and the last thing she wants to do when she’s off work is read and think.
But I think that’s BS, she’s always been like this, even in her youth.
Any ideas?

Abuse

Right?
Someone needs to let this guy know that his wife is not practical, she is an abusive nutcase. Part of the cycle of abuse is disconnecting the victim from support of all kinds.
Lets call a spade a spade here.

Just left him a comment pointing that out. I'll probably die of downvote overload syndrom. But eh.

Yeah, one can always try to help others, but sometimes people just will not help themselves...and there are plenty of crazies on these boards, bathed in their own hate and dogmatic assumptions.
...all we can do is try.

Not yet, when he said: "Any ideas?"
He should inform her that she does not control him, and that he is entitled to read books, and that education is good for children, and that he insists she stop telling him what to do. If she is reasonable, she shouldn't object. If she does then you have a point.
My point is he didn't say she is trying to control him, but yes she is going too far. By what he described, she hates books and says 'yuck' when she sees a book. She's inappropriate but falls short of domestic abusive controlling behaviour. He did not say she is forbidding him to read books. Do not read more into it than what he said.

Wait for a nuclear war to kill her and everyone else.
Then plenty of time for reading.

She don't want her husband and child know anything apart from what she tells them, have serious possessiveness issues, can be a narcissist and a very bad role model for everyone around.

She can't read and got through school on her looks? She had boys do all her school work and now she has men at the office do all her professional work, the whole time emoting about how 'busy' she is?

That is a very likely explanation.

ya know, after this exchange I rewatched Johnny Cash's 1981 made for TV movie 'The Pride of Jesse Hallam' which is available free on youtube. The film deals with the subject of adult illiteracy.

Where did it say this? Don't Assume
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points (2 children) | Copy Link
the post asked for ideas, what I typed was followed by the ? mark which indicates a question
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes but to be fair it was a pretty massive assumption.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points (0 children) | Copy Link
There is no assumption involved. A person asks why someone 'hates reading' and has hated it since childhood, it's hardly a leap to suggest they may be functionally illiterate.
And again, it was a question. well, two questions.

There is a direct contradiction here. Intelligent people almost always appreciate the value of reading. People who hate reading are almost without exception unintelligent. In addition, how the hell did she achieve a college education without reading?
As far as your woman's behaviour goes, this is controlling and abusive to your children. The love of reading is one of the best gifts a parent can give their children.

Is this anything to do with Men's rights?
It is a women who seems to have strange views and who is controlling and could damage her childs life prospects. male and female examples of such people exist. It only becomes mens rights if she is treated differently or handling it is prevented because she is a women.

Yeah it points out abuse, which if you've been here for any amount of time you would know that this sub likes to point out males being abused by females because society likes to pretend that it doesn't exist.
