Found this case very interesting. Firstly because I am very happy we have finally started to enforce our FGM laws, due to the lack of enforcement of the existing laws FGM was effectively legal.

I also found it surprising and that the mother was convicted and the father aquitted despite him being present for the mutilation. I have seen so many cases like this where the father as a bystander/less active participant will get equal or harsher sentencing than the woman committing the abuse. I do think he should have recieved jail time but it was refreshing to see the woman being held to account instead of all the blame falling on to the nearest man.

I find it frustrating that they talk about the psychological trauma of the mutilated girl when psychologists have shown that victims of MGM experience the same effects. Can't pretend the gaping blind spot doesn't piss me off massively but at least we are starting to deter one form of genital mutilation.
