In approximately 27 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands, a man may be presumed to be the father of a child in any of the following circumstances:

He and the child’s mother are or were married to each other, and the child is born during the marriage or within 300 days after the marriage ended.
Before the birth of the child, he and the child’s mother attempted to marry, and the marriage is or could be annulled, and the child is born during the marriage or within 300 days after the marriage is terminated.
He has acknowledged his paternity in writing.
He is obligated to support the child, either by voluntary agreement or court order.
While the child is a minor, he has resided with the child and openly claimed the child as his biological child.

Note. in the states where the presumption of paternity is technically rebuttable, they have an extremely short time period in which to rebut it, usually 30 days. I don't even know if it's possible to file the proper paperwork in that span and if the mother who has custody will have to allow it, unlikely if she's lying about paternity. Also, they have a tendency to not notify the presumptive father until the mother applies for welfare, at which point they will assign 100% of the costs to the presumptive father and it does not matter what a DNA test would show.

And the media is confused why men are boycotting marriage. Why would I get married? I was married and what happens? You get your kid taken and away and end up having to pay child support to someone who makes tens of thousands more than you. Now I find out that she could cheat and you’re still responsible for the child.

Men are wising up - there’s no way marriage is a benefit to guys anymore. Things like this certainly out the icing on the cake

I'm not sure about the U.S but here in Canada you can end up paying child support for kids your ex had before you even met her, even if you weren't married.

If you live together for more than 6 months in my province, you become a common law couple, with all the same stipulations of a married couple. If you break up, you assume child support duties.

Weeeeeeeeeell, it's more that the presumption inside marriage is that the husband has responsibility and generally since affairs are kept secret, the husband has no opportunity to ever contest this presumption. But as to whether in theory the husband could indeed refuse to be listed as the father on the birth certificate if it was done immediately, within a couple of days of the birth, then I thought that was enough to stop child support later. Of course to do this you'd have to DNA test all your kids as they are born and divorce immediately. i tend to assume that would be enough.
