Egh? An employer can choose not to hire someone based on hearsay. An employer can also choose to hire someone in spite of hearsay. Employers have that much freedom.

Would a 35-year-old theft accusation stop you from landing most jobs? That depends on what you allegedly stole, and under what circumstances, and what kind of job you're applying for, but probably not.

Would it stop you from getting a lifetime supreme court appointment? Maybe, if enough senators think it's relevant.

At this point, I think Kavanaugh's attitude disqualifies him far more than the accusation itself. In a courtroom, some of his behavior in that hearing could have gotten him charged with contempt. If he wanted a Supreme Court appointment, he should have been ready to have his character harshly scrutinized.

Not that I can promise I would react better if my job were threatened by such an accusation, but I make minimum wage in a factory. Kavanaugh is going to have it made no matter what happens.

Phrasing it as "if my job were threatened" is such a bullshit minimization. I thought that his conduct was utterly understandable and even laudable.

You're right, he would have been held in contempt by a judge in a criminal court. You know what the main difference is there? The presiding judge would never be allowed to repeatedly state that they believed his accuser despite there being absolutely no evidence. The presiding judge would never be able to refer to two other, unrelated accusations that are so flagrantly false they would be laughable if they were not taken seriously by the media.

He responded to a political hit job and a massive media smear campaign with all the composure I could possibly expect.

You're right, I guess I just have trouble feeling sorry for the man. He would almost certainly work to increase presidential power/immunity. From where the Executive Branch is now, that's just about an existential threat to American democracy. You play for the team that's been fighting dirty for over two years, this is what can happen. It's unfortunately what passes for "just politics" these days.

Massive smear campaigns? Just politics.

Locking up children? Just politics.

Elections that are little more than massive smear campaigns on both sides? Just politics.

Colluding with Russia? Just politics.

Spying on everyone? Just politics.

Robot assassins? Just politics.

Going to war on false pretenses? Just politics.

That's the world I've grown up in. Whether someone as partisan as Kavanaugh gets confirmed seems like it could determine whether the US ever recovers from this tailspin. Traumatizing one extremely powerful, successful man, who will still have a whole lot going for him no matter what happens, doesn't strike me as that huge a deal relatively speaking.

It's not that I don't feel sorry for him as an individual, it's just a matter of, that's what happens, man. This is war. The gloves are off.

I'm just amazed that in a sub devoted to men's rights, you're saying that when someone is on the other side you don't care if they're destroyed by unfounded rape accusations.

Kavanaugh is not responsible for the disastrous state of American politics. I really encourage you to read some of his opinions. I know that people think that judges and justices just side with whomever they like, but judges of his caliber are not ideological the way you seem to think.

One thing I wouldn't be concerned about no matter what side he was on is his feelings. There's far more at stake here. I'm not being partisan. I deliberately mentioned Obama stuff in my previous post.

And as sad as Kavanaugh's situation is, he hasn't actually been wronged. Except maybe by Ford, if she's lying, but that's an unknown, so presume innocence. He was never entitled to be on the SCOTUS. There's nothing illegal about refusing to hire someone based on hearsay from a third party. It sucks, but it's legal, and it should be. He's in the toughest business there is, at a tough point in history.

I don't feel sorry for politicians when they have to face smear campaigns. It goes with the territory. I feel sorry for the millions of ordinary citizens who have to face the greater consequences of those campaigns, successful or not.

In a perfect world, no one would be off the SCOTUS because of a smear campaign. Nor would anyone would be on the SCOTUS because the senate felt sorry for them. But we don't live in a perfect world.

This'll be my last comment. Your statement is demonstrably untrue. Every single court in the entire civilized world would regard what Kavanaugh has gone through - is going through - as harm.

That's men. Every single man is harmed by this smear campaign. The fact that you can't see that is truly sad. Without more than the weight of one woman's word, this man has been called a rapist by every single mainstream media outlet. It can happen to anyone.

Separately - a 'smear campaign' is calling someone a liar. It's pointing out that someone has a history of gambling. It's calling someone a flip-flopper. These days its calling someone a racist or a misogynist. It's usually not accusing someone of a series of felonies with zero basis.

All of you say the same tired sound byte about a job interview again and again. Imagine interviewing before a panel of hiring managers and having half of them declare that they believe you're a rapist. Then they demand that you prove otherwise or you can't get the job, and they also call every newspaper in the world and get them to print it. It's a poor analogy.
