The ONS doesn't list all the statistics on their website which is very annoying (I tried to find out murder statistics, specifically suspect not identified, and didn't get far), They do compile them for the police and possibly other departments. So it's a case of trying to find out where they're from (the department websites) and checking them. I did see a link to some statistics from the Coroners Office, so they're probably one of the sources.

It lists suicide by area going back to 1995. Someone would have to import it into a database, then group the figures and dump the results into a new table, then compile them. I'm still working on crime statistics (cautions is holding things back atm -- offences aren't uniform across all files). I'll see what I can do with this file tomorrow if I have time.

There are two sets of data ([1] and [2]). Both are for England and Wales. The article mentions the data they're presenting includes Scotland. But the ONS file doesn't include those figures. So I've included figures from [3] and created a breakdown in Excel (which you can download from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kaa510l2lzvxj03/Suicides%20by%20year.xlsx?dl=0 )

For 2016 it was: 5,388 (4,035 males; 1,353 females).

The data they're presenting is 433 higher (347 males; 86 females).

There isn't any data for Northern Ireland, and the remaining figure is way too high for it to be for that area. So it's anybodies guess. The biggest oddity is there isn't a breakdown (at least by the higher ONS figures) by city and the Coroners' Office figures didn't provide breakdowns by city the Daily Mail mentioned (only by county).

And the highest ratio (suicide difference between sex) is Wales. It was 0.82 in 2016.
