There could be a lot of reasons for the disparity. Women are brought up now with expectations that they deserve it all, men that they are lucky if. Women told they deserve what ever sex life they want, men don't expect any thing, women are told they can have a great career and a family and only have a man around if they want. Then men having been told none of this is yours by right don't get depressed when they don't get what they never expected. Women on the other hand won't get the man they want, but they know its not fair, they don't get promoted as others have better degrees more experience or work harder, that again is not fair. They find being a single mother too hard or lonely or having a child means they end up putting their career on the back burner or missing time with the child again its not fair. Over all women are finding life is not fair, you do not always win or get what you want and in reality well you can not expect everything your way. That is a big crash for them, instead of getting what they have been told they deserve they face reality and it is a big crash. Don't expect The Guardian to acknowledge you can't have it all if your a girl, they will say see its the evil menz who are holding them back as always and just make them feel worse. Post the industrial revolution men have been separated from their families for large parts of their lives due to having to provide, they knew it many won't have liked it but they were never built up to expect it. Want to reduce the number of younger women on antidepressants stop building them up for a fall.

I wonder if the increasing rates of childlessness and loneliness among gen X and millenial women has to do with it? Or maybe women are more likely than men to seek help and be prescribed SSRIs? I would like to see the rates of SSRI use over the last 40 years. Is this just a modern phenomena?
