This shit is deplorable.

It's funny how we are called out as rape apologists because we think young boys shouldn't be drugged and abused by older women, but a feminist woman can get away with calling for a genocide and everyone will defend them. How serious do you think they'd take #KillAllWomen?

Look I mostly agree here, but seems to me you’re kind of portraying the exact purposeful “ignorance” that the article describes. Which makes me believe you obviously didn’t even read the article, and just assumed that since it defends her it must be retarded.

Like, you know that she wasn’t ACTUALLY calling for white genocide. She was trying to be ironic in response to something, the context of which has been lost. Yes it was still dumb of her, and yes should probably have consequences. Probably should prevent her from getting the job she got even... sure, I can agree with that.

But if someone on the far right said “kill all black people” and was actually a hateful racist, not being ironic, not doing it satirically within the context of a conversation about racism... it would be totally different. So it’s like, you know these things aren’t the same, but you’re pretending they are. It’s an obvious false equivalency. That’s really the major point of this article I think. But your comment here just falls for the exact trap that was being discussed in the article.

The most ironic thing is that she was literally doing what you’re doing now, she was using it as a retort to something else that she considered racist, to be ironic... setting up a false equivalency. And now however many years later, the ping pong ball bounces back , context disloves, and it’s right back on the other side with you taking it at face value and ironically retorting with another false equivalency. It would be like, if five years from now I found this comment of yours and claimed that you once said “kill all women”... and round and round we go.

The fact is, this shouldn’t be as big a deal as it is, and equating it to ACTUAL genocidal nazism, is dishonest.

I'm mainly talking about the fact that if we ironically posted #killallwomen we'd be carpet bombed by feminists and news articles and nobody would want to defend us or listen if we did. I also am not convinced that the sentiment isn't accurate to the wording. I get what you are saying, but I read down far enough into that article to be weirded the hell out by the excuses on show for these tweets. They sound almost brainwashed. For example:

‘#KillAllMen' was another way of saying ‘it would be nice if the world sucked less for women

I don't buy that. It's an excuse and he admits its his own interpretation. They sound like crazies.

Like, you know that she wasn’t ACTUALLY calling for white genocide. She was trying to be ironic in response to something, the context of which has been lost.

If I remember, the context cited by most of these defences is that she is 'responding' to a set of tweets that happened in the future.

But if someone on the far right said “kill all black people” and was actually a hateful racist, not being ironic

If someone posted just: "kill all black people" would we assume they were being ironic? Would people defend the irony?

The most ironic thing is that she was literally doing what you’re doing now, she was using it as a retort to something else that she considered racist

You'll notice that I pointed out the irony and didn't say the actual thing. She just said the actual thing and it sounded pretty much like she meant it.

It would be like, if five years from now I found this comment of yours and claimed that you once said “kill all women”... and round and round we go.

Except I didn't. Quite patently. And the fact of the matter is that when people like the Washington Post are allowing feminists to write extremely serious articles titled "Why can't we hate men?" I'm more inclined to take this woman seriously on principal.

Like, you know that she wasn’t ACTUALLY calling for white genocide

maybe, maybe not. She's not entitled to be trusted, or treated with leniency - especially if it does not suits us at the moment.

Democrats are allergic to the notion that all men and women should be judged by the same standard. Ezra Klein is a life-long Democratic party shill.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sometimes a conversation can go deeper then figuring out which opinion is Democrat and which is Republican and then picking your side. So much on this sub is so important and meaningful, and real, and I don’t think you have to be a Republican, to appreciate it. Aren’t you just being a Republican Party shill by saying this comment? This topic and this article aren’t about politics.

Every single sub on this site just gets infested by all of you politics obsessed ant swarms, you completely usurp the topic and then in into your political grand standing stage and prevent any actual discussion from occurring because now it’s just a “party” zone. Fuck your BS politics. Go back to a political sub.

I couldn't agree more. There does seem to be an increasing tendency on this sub-reddit to paint political groups with a broad brush and to attack liberals. As someone who is moderate-left leaning, this is very concerning. There is a very real risk that this sub may lose what made great to begin with.

Much of the Jeong furor has been about actually racist alt-right trolls weaponizing old tweets in bad faith to get an Asian woman fired from an important job.

What is "racist" or "alt-right" about accurately quoting hateful things someone actually said?

Are they literally saying "How dare you quote her, she's an asian woman you racist!"

Keep in mind this is still the same NYT that fired Quinn Norton under quite literally the exact same circumstances: http://nymag.com/selectall/2018/02/why-quinn-norton-and-the-new-york-times-parted-ways.html

If you White then you Richard Spenser.

The NYT would never have put a white man who called for the extinction of blacks on its editorial board.
